CHARLES DICKENS is renowned as a novelist who used his considerable skills not only to write rattling good stories, people with memorable and often eccentric char acters, but also to make scathing comments on the conditions of the p o o r . ; Neil Bartlett’s adaptation clearly focus

es on this last aspect. Rarely have I seen such a dark production, both literally and- in interpretation. - This is no cosy version with jolly songs. The setting is a dank underground squat,

littered with broken furniture and with a. roof that caves in dramatically at the start. The cast of 10 adults forms a chorus and take on a number of parts to act out the story of the orphan, with the Artful Dodger (Tom Lawrence) acting as narra tor.

Whatever you want ..we've got it They all slip in and out of character in a

seamless narrative. Three actors play young Oliver (Joseph

Barratt on the night I saw it). Among the strong cast, Ella Vale is a

defiant Nancy and Stephen Finegold a believably brutal Bill Sykes. The actual violence is cunningly masked by clever use of Punch and Judy puppets, reminding us of some of the domestic violence enshrined in much of our children’s drama. But of course, Oliver Twist is Fagin’s

play and Peter Macqueen is excellent, at times repulsive and at other times pathetic. In the closing stages, this play does not shy away from Dickens’ account of Fagin’s last night in the cells before execution and the horror of hanging and “the drop,” to death. ■ Christmassy it isn’t, and not for younger children, but for older children and adults it is a thought-provoking interpretation with many modern resonances.

walking as an effective and low- risk form of physical activity,, particularly for those who are inactive. Kath Mitchell said: "Walking looks set to play a bigger role in creating a healthi er nation. Evidence increasingly shows its many benefits. You don't have to be fit to sta rt with. The young and old, as

well as those recovering from ill ness, can enjoy it, and it's free”. ■ " Stepping Out hopes to: • Increase awareness in Rib
