Castle staff uniforms go to new life in Balkans

By Duncan Smith

VICTIMS OF civil war and ethnic cleansing in Eastern Europe are the unlikely bene ficiaries of a change of uni form for Castle Cement employees at the company’s Ribblesdale works in Clitheroe. The company has recently

updated its staff uniform, which meant hundreds of unwanted, but very good quality old uni forms had to be disposed of.

Rather than throw them away, Castle contacted the charity, Blythswood Care, which was delighted to take the uniforms and make very good use of them. Castle Cement employees at each location made a big effort in removing tax tabs so that the company could donate the gar ments to charity. The charity, established in

1966, provides a range of care services for people, predomi nantly in Eastern Europe and the Balkans. Its regional manag er, Phil Shorthouse, said: “Cloth

ing is always much needed in these areas. The uniforms are heading to the Raska area of Serbia and will then be distrib uted by the local Red Cross. “They will go to men and

women, victims of civil war and ethnic cleansing in Croatia, Bosnia and Kosovo, who have nothing. The clothing, men’s and ladies’ suits, is of a very good quality and will be very much appreciated by the people receiv ing it. It’s a wonderful gesture by Castle Cement.” Maria Punchard, from Castle

Cement’s Ribblesdale works, said: “We change our staff uni form from time to time to fresh en up the design, but the old uni forms are always in a very good condition. It would have been terrible to have simply thrown them away so we approached an organisation, which put us in touch with Blythswood Care. “The charity told us of the

plight of thousands of refugees in the former Yugoslavia so it is very comforting to know our old uniforms will be put to such good use.”

YEAR 6 pupils from Brennands Endowed Primary School in Slaidburn raised almost £400 for the North West Air Ambulance through a tea and cake afternoon. The seven Year Six pupils persuaded

their mums and grandmas to make cakes, biscuits and buns to sell during the after noon, which was advertised through posters and flyers the pupils had made using their ICT skills. The pupils also offered waiter-service to

provide the refreshments and raised fur ther funds through a tombola. A grand total of £365 was raised in less

than two hours and together with a collec tion from the Christmas 2004 production, a cheque for £400 was recently presented to the local North West Air Ambulance representative. The pupils’ efforts MU pay for one air ambulance trip to the Ribble Valley area. Picture shows from left to right, pupils

Stephen Harrison, Katrina McIntyre, Mark Rowland, Alice Waddington, Jor dan Gott, Andrew Harrison and Mrs Leach, the local air ambulance representa tive. Pupil Mick Handley is not pictured, but helped to organise the event, (s)

Company fined for killing fish

A CONSTRUCTION company has been ordered to pay £8,000 for killing five small fish in Waddington. A court heard that the company failed

to stop silting of the brook that runs through the Ribble Valley village of Waddington while they were carrying out bridge replacement work. The water discolouration stretched for

500 metres and a fisheries expert who waded up Waddow Brook found five dead fish and others distressed by the silting. Galliford Try Construction Limited, of

Wolvey, Hinckley, Leicestershire, pleaded guilty to causing pollution. The company was fined £6,000 and ordered to pay £2,120 costs to the Environnement Agency. The court heard the company had

installed a silt trap below the bridge works a Waddow Grove bridge, but this proved inadequate and silt spread downstream.
