54 Clitheroe Advertiser & Times, Thursday, July 28th, 2005 H

IN their seventh game of the season, during

which they have played against the A teams of the other Ribblesdale League clubs, Clitheroe CC’s Under 11 Cobras B recorded their first tie of the season against Blackburn Northern. They have won all of

their other games except for defeat to a very strong Clitheroe A team. The locals were some

what weakened by holiday commitments but every member of the team played well. The result was achieved

with nine runs needed off the last two balls of the game which Andrew Ramsden hit both for four to secure a tie. Northern batted first

and scored 76-2 with an aggregate of 66. Bilal Ahmed and George Drake took the wickets and Clitheroe scored 106-8, four of which were run out). George Drake scored a

superb 34 off four overs, with Nathan Galloway, Andrew Ramsden, Nathan Nettleton and Hugh Graham all scoring double figures.

Whalley lose Paradise no big run chase fun for

WHALLEY were unfortu nate to fall just 32 runs shy of their target in Sat urday’s high scoring game at Cherry Tree. After making the Black

burn side fight for the impressive score of 252-6, the locals retaliated with conviction, with Richard Palmer top-scoring, only to be bowled out for 220. Cherry Tree won the

toss and elected to b a t with openers Mark Had- field and Riley taking the helm. The pair put on 74 for the before Lee Burgess had Hadfield caught by Lee Kearsley for 37. A second wicket soon

followed as Cherry Tree professional Zahoor Elahi went behind for six, caught by John Rain off fellow paid man Phil Thornton. Unfortunately Riley

proved much more trou blesome as he continued to rack up his big total with 10 boundaries and a six. He had good support

from Nigel Robbins (18), Andrew Robinson (21) and Michael Veevers (36) but the opener was eventu ally caught by Whalley captain Martin Davies off the bowling of Burgess. This, plus the undefeat

ed efforts of M. Friend (23 not out) and Andreas Sud- hik (13 not out) saw the Blackburn side finish with a comfortable 252-6. In reply Whalley never

gave up the chase. The S tation Road o u tf it opened with captain Davies and Rain and the pair gelled comfortably enough to conjure up 82. Rain was the second

and scored 116 all out thanks in the main to cap tain Martin Briggs who scored 45 runs with David Howard and (23) and Alis tair Marsh (19) the next highest scorers on the day as Baxenden professional Indika Gallage took inter spersed wickets to finish with impressive figures of 4-19. The Church Meadow

visitors didn’t get off to the best of starts either as opener Ryan Gladwin was removed for a duck by Gal lage after facing just two balls and his replacement Gary Hunt suffered the same fate but lasted 11 balls. Briggs’ highest innings

of the day for both sides came off five fours and a six but after David Howard had been run out no one else looked even close to breaking the tempo of the Baxenden bowlers as Peter User took 3-20 and both Stephen Molloy and Stephen Bul- cock took a wicket apiece. Only John Braithwaite

mustered anything of note and he only edged into double figures with 11 runs to his name as Ribblesdale were bowled out in ju s t over 37 overs. In reply Baxenden felt

little resistance in attain ing their target as captain Mark Rishton and Fran cois Herbst led the line with 33 and 38 runs respectively. 'The pair struck seven

fours a piece and Herbst added a six to his tally before being caught by Martin Briggs off the bowl ing of David Howard at 83- I. Rishton almost immedi ately followed, bowled out by Ribblesdale professional Gerard De Bruin, leaving Galium Waddington (6 not out) and Indika Gallage (23 not out) to seek out the winning runs. This weekend Ribbles

Clitheroe Advertiser 8t Times, Thursday, July 28lh, 2005 55

READ put in a superb per formance to reach the final of the Twenty20 competi tion. They shone with both

Twenty 20 joy for Read

b a t and ball to sweep Clitheroe aside and set up a final clash with either Baxenden or Great Har wood who clash tonight. Clitheroe won the toss

and batted. But the first eight overs

proved crucial as Andrew Bennett and Frank Barden bowled beautifully. They bowled their allot

ted fours overs each straight up. And by the time they

had finished Clitheroe were 29-3 with their top three batsmen all back in the tent. Bennett had the incredi

ble figures of 3-0 off four overs, almost unheard over miserliness in this form of the game. And Barden had 2-15 as

Clitheroe were reeling. Simon Coulter h it an

unbeaten 55 as Clitheroe eventually closed on 126-8. But chasing a little over a

run-a-ball was never likely to really tax Read on a wick-

still to face. Clitheroe

Record set by Chatburn pair

CHATBURN seconds continued their recent win ning run xvith an emphatic 87-run victory over Sandy Lane on Saturday. The locals batted first

and lost five quick wickets but the arrival at the wick et of Andy Lambert and Aamir Zulfi to ta lly changed the game. They then put together a record breaking partnership of 208 with a breath taking batting display. Lambert xvas finally

knocked out with a couple of overs left for 122 and Zulfi finished 84 not out, an excellent performance by both players as Chat burn finished on 239-6 after their allotted overs. In reply Sandy Lane

struggled to keep up with the asking rate and were

finally dismissed for 152. Paul Shorrock (4-35) and Chris Mulhearn (4-44) were the major xvicket tak ers. This win consolidated

the team in third place and will cause the top two teams concern. However the Chatburn

first eleven lost by 74 runs to Sandy Lane’s first teamers in their Craven and District Second Division fixture. Andy Booth most

notably took 3-34 in the first innings while both Rod Booth and Russell Braithwaite dismissed 2- 45 and 2-34 respectively. In reply to Sandy Lane’s

157-9 Chatburn hit 83 all out with most notable per formances with the bat coming from Richard Shovelton (25) and John Reynolds (18).

H ROLLS-ROYCE FC are to hold an open 5-a-side Tournament at Rolls-Royce Playing Fields on Sunday,

first served basis. Light refreshments will be provided at the sports

field, and the social club will be open to all participants and spectators to make use of during and after the tournament, with a £1 entrance fee for non-members. There will be a medal and trophy presentation for

successful teams a t the conclusion of the tourna ment. Any interested parties are advised to contact Lee Barrett (07843075894) or Jonathon Phillips (07971488959). The tournament is scheduled to start at 11-30 a.m.

et currently full of runs. And that was just how it

turned out as Terry Litle, stand-in pro Kumar Dhar- masena. Driver and Michael Whalley all made more than 20. That set Read up for an

easy win as they eventual ly reached 129-3 with one ball short of three overs
