New Blues boss aims

for winning formula

By Adrian Capstick

CLITHEROE EC’s new regime aims to instil a winning habit at the town team. That is manager Tommy Law

son’s ultimate aim and so far news from Shawbridge suggests that h'is fresh approach and style of train ing has struck a cord with the squad too.

., The first team have been back in-training for the best part of a month now and the Clitheroe boss admits that although it is taking time to assess all the players, he is glad that the Blues have got a win under their belt so early on. Clitheroe beat Cymru Alliance

champions Buckley Town 2-1 on Saturday in their first pre-season friendly before the UniBond First Division kicks-off on August 20th and Lawson believes it is only the start of things to come. “Winning is a habit and to beat Buckley is a good s ta r t for us.

Players should go out expecting to win and it is our ultimate aim to establish th a t mentality at Clitheroe.” Lawson and a ss istant boss

Benny Phillips say reports have been very positive and that they are pleased by what they have seen so far from the players. Lawson said: “We owe it to be

fair to the existing lads who have thrown their caps in the ring. They have benefitted from the training and feel better for it and if a few more lads from last sea son’s squad come and see us then they will be treated the same. “We have brought lads in and

have three with us a t the moment who have played a t a very high standard, two at UniBond Pre mier standard and one a bit high er. “Obviously there will be more coming before the end of the sum mer and it is to be hoped that they will enjoy their time with us, that they are within the budget of the club and that we will be able to

successfully negotiate terms.” At present the majority of the

players on trial at the club have been invited by Phillips as Lawson has been away on holiday but the former Prescot Cables boss aims to have more bodies down at the club for Saturday’s home game against Lancaster City who play in the Nationwide Conference North. He added: “I ’ll have a better

insight by the end of the week as we’ve more players coming down, in time we’ll be discussing finances and if we can agree then I ’ll be delighted. “I ’ve had a holiday. I’m fuelled

and ready to get stuck in and get my hands dirty as we are looking to build a team very quickly.” Tuesday night saw Clitheroe

face tough opposition in another Conference North side Leigh RMI with a trialist starting in goal, three more new faces in mid- field and a couple more on the bench.

Tommy Lawson Lawson is understandably

cagey about banding about names until he has some signatures down for next season but existing play ers in action were Danny Wood- head, Paul Stansfield, Ryan Parr, Chris Nestor, Russell Clark, Chris Whittingham, Craig Sargeson and captain for the night Gary Jack- son. In the end the Blues lost 4-0 to

a first team side two divisions above them, but it was clear to see that the tougher opposition made them work harder, gave them less time on the ball and forced a bet ter passing movement than what was seen towards the end of last season. Another stern test in the form

of Lancaster on Saturday (kick off 3 p.m.), will only further aid the side’s preparations before they travel to North West Counties First Division side Colne on Tues day (kick-off 7-30 p.m.).

Tennis aces power to win

CLITHEROE Tennis Club powered to their 12th win in 13 outings with a 4- 0 thumping of Accrington A at Chatburn Road. Derek P a r ro t t and

Daniel Bush once again paired up and were in their best form of the season all day. Against the top Accring

ton pair they were in con trol throughout and raced to a 6-1, 5-0 lead, were briefly pegged back, but closed out the match 6-4. On the other court the

wiley old pair of Phil Mile- ham and Tony Bush were somewhat out of sorts but took the honours in a very tight game 7-6,7-5. That result meant that Derek and Daniel antici

pated a tough match against the same pair, but it was not to be as they cruised to a 6-3,6-0 result, canny serving and heavy groundstrokes the order of the day. Tony and Phil were then

left to collect the final result, and the bonus point, and their form improved slightly as they took a close match 6-3, 6- 4.

The result further

cements Clitheroe’s second placing in the league, but with only one promotion place available, and holi days looking to deplete the team tor the next month it looks like the cup is their main chance of glory this season.

Walker’s thanks ® to sponsors

RECENTLY we featured race ace Dave Walker, who fought back from breaking his collar bone to become Preston and District 600cc champion. Walker, who is spon

sored by John Walsh at Buckhurst Plant Hire at Waterfoot, as well as Keith Clement Auto Electrical Service a t Chatburn, would also like to thank Norman Burgess at Silko- lene Oils for his help and advice. He is also on the lookout

Eight wins on the trot as Clitheroe eye title

AFTER Clitheroe’s 10-wick et victory over Earby, cap tain Neil Bolton believes that if his side can take their form into Saturday’s game against Settle and then Great Har wood next week they have a good shout at the Veka Rib- blesdale Cricke League title. At the moment Clitheroe are

'■!?

four bonus points behind joint leaders Settle and Great Har wood and if they can get the right result against both sides and con tinue their nm of eight games unbeaten, then the honours could be heading to Chatburn Road for the first time in 16 years. Bonus points have been

Bolton’s only concern but despite failing to bowl Earby

out the Clitheroe captain had no complaints. Clitheroe pieced together a

tremendous batting display, all the more Impressive given th a t Earby’s Mohammed Ayub struck a first innings 104 to see the West Craven side to 227-7. New signing Farouk Butt

from Blackburn Northern added fresh impetus to a bowling line up that has suf fered a spate of injuries. The fresh man got off to a

flier and took 3-61, including the wicket of Ayub, while Naeem Ashraf claimed 4-42, including captain Chris Wal ton for 26. In contrast Mark Harg

reaves struggled at the other end in the early overs and was hit over cover and out of the ground for six by Ayub. I t had looked as though it

would be a containment job as Clitheroe were staring down the barrel at a possible 280, until Butt took the all important wicket to bring the Earby man down and effec tively end the innings. Unfor tunately, due to only an aver age display in the field bonus points slipped the locals grasp. In reply Bolton didn’t envis

age knocking the runs off with none down but mth Earby, in Bolton’s view, having the poor est bowling attack in the league. Shahid Nawaz smashed

an undefeated 143 and Bolton returned 66 not out. The Clitheroe professional

struck 16 fours and six sixes causing several balls to be disappear from sight into the brook th a t adjoins Earby’s ground. He made his total off 105 balls while in a support ive roll Bolton finished with nine fours and a six for his efforts after facing 86 balls. So with just over 31 overs

played Clitheroe left Earby demoralised as they finished for 229 without loss. Clitheroe’s quest for top

spot continues with a tough test away at Settle on Satur day followed by the second of the weekend’s fixtures a t

home to Oswaldtwistle on Sunday where victory and

bonus points are Bolton’s aim. Earby
