THREE girls from Oakhill Col lege are celebrating after attend ing the county netball trials in Leyland. Sophie Hindle, of Year 7,
Gemma Bland and Amber Hazelton, both Year 8, joined over 60 others from all over Lan cashire for the trials - progress ing successfully to the afternoon session and then so impressed the selectors, that all three were offered a place in the county training squads for next season. It was, says the college, a fan
tastic result and a credit to their skill and determination and indeed to the excellent coaching they had received beforehand. They started learning in the
Preparatory School at Oakhill when they were coached by ex- England player Anna Newall. As they moved into senior school, they were taught during
family venue
lessons by head of girls’ PE, Mrs C. Lee, who is vice chairman of the Kibble Valley Netball Club and, a t lunchtimes, by Mrs Sarah Thompson who is chair man of the Claheroe-based club. Along with their school team
mates they enjoyed regular competition against schools as far afield as Sedburgh, Man chester and Giggleswick and next season they have been invited to play in York. Not con tent with all this competition, they decided to play even more by joining local clubs in the Kib ble Valley and Darwen. And who knows, if they con
tinue to make such good progress, maybe one day the England team will be enjoying an Oakhill presence. Pictured, front row from the

Ramblers choose Wild Boar Fell for weekend trip
LAST Saturday, Clitheroe Ram blers travelled on the Settle to Carlisle railway line between the stations of Garsdaleand Kirkby Stephen for an 11-and-a-half mile high level linear walk tra versing the Wild Boar Fell Mas sif.
Conditions proved to be ideal
for walking - sunshine, but not too hot, a light breeze and very dry underfoot. Leaving Kirkby Stephen sta
tion, Ben Brown led the party of 11 along the road to Moor End
and a bridlepath was then taken until Tommy Road was joined at Pudding Howe Hill. Along this stretch, several
musk thistles were seen, one of England’s handsomest thistles, with its large purple drooping flower heads. After leaving this narrow
road, the long, but easily graded ascent of Wild Boar Fell began, by way of Greenlow Rigg and then over Little Fell and High Dolphinsty. A short refreshment stop was
taken on the early stages of the climb, with a late lunch on the top of Wild Boar Fell (2324 ft.) by the cairns on the eastern end of the plateau above High White
Scar. This is a very fine view point, much more so than at the ordnance survey trig point one quarter of a mile to the north west, which is of equal height. The peaks of Mallerstang ■
edge dominate the scene to the east with the more distant Howgill Fells to the west. After descending to a small tarn, there
was further climbing along the ridge to Swarth Fell and then Swarth Fell Pike. The previously hidden mountains of Whernside and Pen-y-ghent came into view and a flock of golden plover were also seen. The boundary fence was fol
lowed down over The Tongue to Grisedale Common. From here footpaths were taken via East House and Blake Mire, passing the almost dry-Clough Force to reach Garsdale Head and Gars- dale station.

the proms! ALL the a re a ’s secondary schools enjoy proms events - now a Clitheroe primary school has decided to follow in their footsteps! A farewell ball was enjoyed
by pupils from Pendle Primary School.
Year 6 classmates from the
school said a stylish goodbye to their former school, with an event held a t the Moorcock Inn, Waddington. Financed and organised by
Friends of Pendle PTA group, the pupils enjoyed a “grown up” evening, which included a disco, meal and games. Given as a gift to the pupils
from the PTA, the organisers pulled a couple of surprises on the youngsters by arranging a limo and Army truck to escort some of them to the venue. Mrs Fiona Atkinson, who was one of the parents who
helped organise the ball, said it was a really great night, enjoyed by all. “I t was a smashing night,” she commented.
“The children had a whale of
a time.” The pupils, who will be starting secondary school in September, were each present ed with a year book to cherish

Homeless man broke into a village cricket club
A HOMELESS man who was turned away from a Blackburn hostel found himself a bed for the night at a village cricket club. Blackburn magistrates heard that
James Wild (20) broke into Whal ley Cricket Club and as well as spending the night there helped himself to food and drink. Wild, of no fixed address, pleaded
guilty to burglary and theft and handling stolen property - a pub sign. He was remanded in custody
until August 3rd for the preparation of pre-sentence reports. The court heard th a t Wild
appeared before the magistrates last Monday and pleaded not guilty to theft of the sign. He was released on bail but was then turned away from the Nightsafe hostel in Bridge Street, Blackburn, where he had been staying. Mr Michael Blacklidge (defend
ing) said Wild had gravitated to the Whalley area where he was brought up and where his family still live. He
smashed a window to gain entry to the cricket club, where he ate some food and had a couple of cans of lager before getting his head down. He said Wild had denied theft of
the pub sign on Monday, but accepted handling it. The sign had been taken from a yard by another man who asked Wild to help him carry it down the street in broad daylight. “Not surprisingly they quickly
came to the attention of the police,” said Mr Blacklidge.
