Lawson lands ‘first choice’

UNffiOND

CLITHEROE boss Tommy Lawson has got his first choice replacement for the vacant position of assis ta n t manager a t Shaw- hridge. Mark Smitheringale,

who is at fellow UniBond Fist Division side Goole, will step into the role Benny Phillips vacated just under two weeks ago and Lawson is looking forward to linking up with the ex- Peterborough player again. Smitheringale played

under Lawson when the Blues boss was manager at Droylsden and the ex-pro- fessional has been around the non-league circuit and was player-coach at Harro gate Railway before follow ing manager Paul Marshall to Goole Unlike Phillips, who ulti

mately left due to travel issues, Smitheringale lives in Skipton so the move to Clitheroe is just a short trip across the border rather than the 124 mile round tr ip he does now to the North Humberside club. However, he won’t be on

board until Tuesday’s Chal lenge Cup game against

Woodley Sports, as to be fair to Goole, he has given them time to sort them selves out. Lawson said: “Mark was

my first call and Goole have agreed to let him go but he is giving them a period of time to settle. I am pre pared to wait as long as it takes though as it must be done right. He won’t be making the trip to Belper Town on Saturday but he will be a t Shawbridge for out next home game.” Due to heavy rain Clitheroe’s game at War

rington Town on Tuesday was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch but Sat urday’s late Z-2 home draw against Kidsgrove Athletic was as good as a win for the Blues boss, b u t despite great goals from Alan Goar and Gary Jackson - it could have been better. He said: “I was made up

to get a late result, it was like a win for us. “The game could have

been easier and there are one or two things we will have to go over. We were always in their half and they scored on the break twice. We were dominating and with 10 minutes to go it was the right time to throw another forward on. “Jacko (Gary Jackson)

laid the ball off for Alan’s goal but, not singling out Gary, if he had been more aware of what Tony was doing around him earlier in the game the team would have benefited. “He did well for his own

goal, as that is what he does best, but they need to work more as a unit and be more aware of one another.” On Saturday the Blues

are away at basement side Belper 'Town. The Derbyshire side only

lost to a single goal in mid week against, of all sides, Kidsgrove Athletic, while Spalding United, who were also struggling earlier in the season, beat league leaders Bridlington Town 2-0 so “everyone is capable of any thing” in Lawson’s opinion. But he rates next Tues

day’s opponents Woodley Sports as one of the best: “Woodley are a good team and it won’t be easy. They gave us a good run when they came to our place last time and it will be another tough game.” Meanwhile it has been

confirmed that Simon Gar ner will be suspended for four games, three matches for the red card against Chorley and a fourth for picking up five yellow cards over the course of the sea son. But Gamer’s suspension

aside and Ross Clegg’s knee injury flair, Lawson has a full bill of health for both games. 'Tuesday’s UniBond Challenge Cup game a t Shawbridge kicks-off a t 7- 45 p.m. The Reserves are also in

action this Friday night, weather permitting, a t home to Altrincham, kick off 7-45 p.m.

Aiming for the top _______By Adrian Capstick_______

A YOUNG Clitheroe boxer is hoping to follow in the footsteps of his idol Amir

Khan. Just like the Olympic silver medalist

from Bolton, 12-year-old Mohammed Ihsan Sarfraz is aiming to be the greatest and second best will not do. The Ribblesdale High School Technol

ogy College pupil recently returned from an international competition in Copen hagen, Denmark, where he won silver for his endeavours, but was deeply disap pointed that he missed out on gold. His first-ever defeat was in the final.

but in light of his opponent being a cou ple of years older, a foot taller, three kilo grams heavier and having a longer reach, Mohammed acquitted himself well, but | could not get past his opponent’s jab. The Henthorne boxer had two fights in

all at the HSK Box Cup competition, which featured 300 boxers from all over i Scandinavia. He trains with Police Amateur Boxing '

Club in Blackburn, and first took to the ring two years ago. His boxing season has only just started,

and he will be travelling all over the coun try over the coming months aiming to embark on a fresh unbeaten run.

Floodgates open as Whalley lose

Whalley Under 1 3 s .........................1 Lammach Under 1 4 s .....................9 WHALLEY bowed out of this cup competition well-beaten by an older team who used their physical advan tage to dominate the game. The first half proved to be an even

affair, and it was 15 minutes into the game before Lammack opened the scoring and the floodgates opened. Lammack quickly scored another

five before half-time, four from corners where the difference in height between the two sets of players was crucial. • Whalley came out in a different

frame of mind after the break, and they began to make their tackles count and matched Lammack defensively. Unfortunately, Lammack grabbed

another before Whalley were able to score their consolation goal through man-of-the-match Sam. Cross. And the last 10 minutes compound
