Clitheroe Advertiser & Times, Thursday, October 27th, 2005 21 Famine horror is recalled by an expert
THE horrors of the great Irish famine were recalled by speaker Prof. Christine Kincaly at the meeting of Clitheroe Probus Club. Despite the severity of that famine
it is a sad fact that there have been more famines in the 20th Century than at any time in recorded history. However the Irish famine was the most lethal in history. The English
government at the time was fending off starvation with well-organised measures. Then a new government was elected on a promise of lower
taxes. Tax expended on resources was
suspended or reduced or cancelled completely and over the next four years hundreds of thousands died. Irish merchants compounded the dis
aster by exporting ever increasing
amounts of food. The vote of thanks was given by
member Cliff Astin. The club meets at the Pendle Club,
Lowergate, on the first and third Fri
day of the month. The next meeting is on November
4th, at 10-45 a.m. when member Bob Jones presents “A Mixed Bag”.
