to tell the big people how they think things should be. The show is looking for boys and girls from all over the UK - including the Kibble Valley - aged between four and 11 to take part in a pilot for the new show. LEADING Irish band Dervish will be visiting the area on November 7th, during a rare tour of Eng land. I t is now five years since

Dervish last played a major series of dates in England and local fans have welcomed news of their gig a t Burnley Mechanics next month. Since last visiting Eng

land, they have continued to record and tour in Ire land, Europe and the States. They have even played

as far afield as China and Israel, and when the organ isers of Brazil’s legendary Rock in Rio Festival were searching for a band to rep resent the best in tradition al Celtic music, they looked no further than Dervish to showcase Irish music before an audience of 250,000. Dervish

combine

vibrant, dynamic sets of jigs and reels with beauti fully measured songs from the unique voice of Cathy Jordan.

Guitar, fiddle, flute,

bouzouki, mandola, bodhran and accordion ensure there is plenty of firepower to create an irre sistible energy, while Cathy delivers both traditional and contemporary songs with a captivating guile. Dervish will thrill those

who have enjoyed pub ses sions while visiting Ireland, taking the same music, but lifting it to a new level. This is not a sanitised,

gift shop version of Irish music, but a band coming from the heart of the tradi tion. Promoter Simon Hegin-

botham explained: “I t ’s really exciting to be bring ing a band like Dervish back to England again. Folk fans have been cry

ing out to hear them again, and at last they’re going to get the chance.” For further information

on ticket prices and avail ability, call the Mechanics box office on 01282 664400.

trombonist a t the age of only 15 and many will remember his playing with the CRGS Swing Band at St Paul’s in Febru ary of last year. Michael Isherwood is a year older and

gained his grade 8 on the flute last year, losing only 7 marks! He plays with effort less silvery tone and his feel for the music comes shining through. Both he and Richard are leading play

ers in the Lancashire Youth Concert Band and both have performed in the Thursday lunchtime series of concerts at Knowle Green Village Hall. The concert will be a varied evening

with music for flute and piano and for trombone and organ or piano. They will be accompanied by the Lon-

gridge Parish organist Nigel Spooner and at one point all three of them will join forces for an unusual combination of instruments. Michael will include music by Faure

and John R u t te r ’s Suite Antique and Richard will play Holst’s Concertante for Trombone and Organ amongst more well- known music. Richard started to play the trombone

on Christmas Day 1996 (when he was six) and had been itching to play since he was three! He achieved his Grade 7 with Dis tinction a year ago and will take his grade 8 this term. When not performing music, he is a gifted mathematician and has a passion for rugby and cricket. Michael is a sixth form student at

Haslingden High School. As well as being First Flautist in the Lancashire Youth Concert Band, he plays with Rossendale

Valley Sounds and performs as guest soloist with Haslingden Choir. A fan of Burnley FC, he is a footballer

himself, playing in goal regularly for the Rossendale United Youth Team. The concert takes place on Saturday,

October 29th, in St Paul’s Church, Lon- gridge, starting at 7-30 p.m. Tickets are £6 and are available from

Longridge Post Office or on the door and include cheese and wine. It promises to be a thoroughly enjoy

able evening, ample demonstration of what these teenagers can achieve.
