Nightclub boss cleared after denying charges
by Court Reporter
A NIGHTCLUB owner has been cleared of allowing drugs to be supplied on his premises after a lengthy trial at Preston Crown Court. Ian Jackson (60), of Padiham
Road, Sabden, had told the jury that there was no truth in sug gestions that he turned a blind eye to drug dealing at Monroes, in Great Harwood, which he had
run for 11 years. Jackson, of Padiham Road, was acquitted of knowingly permitting or suffer ing the supply of ecstasy in the club. Judge Andrew Gilbert QC had
previously directed the jury to return not guilty verdicts on four other charges - two of being con cerned in the supply of drugs and two of permitting premises to be used for drug supplying. The prosecution had described the club as a hovel in the middle
of nowhere, which did not have a drinks licence. They alleged the reason young
people went there was for drugs. After the case, defence solicitor
Mr Simon Farnsworth said the proceedings had weighed heavily on Mr Jackson and he was delighted with the outcome. He said: “We think it is a land
mark case in many ways where the owner of a nightclub has been personally prosecuted for what are clearly the actions of others

within a club. He hopes that in future there will be co-operation between pub and bar owners and the police, which has not been the case for Monroes. “Monroes, its management
and committee have come under' very close scrutiny over a number of years by Lancashire constabu lary. “Mr Jackson has proved over
the last two months that the club has been run in a professional manner.”
Police admit: ‘Yes, we are disappointed’
FOLLOWING the court case, operations manager for
Eastern Division, Supt. Warren Ihmer has expressed his disappointment at the not guilty verdict. He said: "We are; of course, disappointed with the not
guilty verdict. “It is important to remember that the policing opera
tions involving Monroe's Club were in response to the community in Great Harwood telling us that the situa tion was unacceptable. "Following numerous complaints from the local com
munity we conducted a series of pre-planned operations in and around the Wood Street and Balfour Street area. "While the policing activity associated with Monroe's
Club has indeed been expensive, due to the number of resources we have utilised for the operations, this was all about us listening and responding to community con cern. “We worked hard to restore peace to a disrupted com
munity that felt powerless to take any action themselves. “That is what we are here for and that is what we achieved, despite the verdict."
