A BILLINGTON man deliberately drove his sister’s car after drinking and waited for police to arrive, a court heard. Blackburn magistrates
were told that David Tupling’s actions amounted to a cry for help after his family had been thrown into turmoil by the suicide of his mother. Defence solicitor Mr
Roger Pickles said while his client’s actions had been unusual, they had the desired effect. Tupling (24), of Billington
Gardens, pleaded guilty to being in charge of a car with excess alcohol and driving without insurance. Pie was disqualified from driving for 28 months and fined £300 with £40 costs. Mr Pickles said that
Tupling’s mother committed suicide in October and that Tupling had found her. Sui cide notes were left, but they made no sense. “Nobody understood why
she had taken her own life and the consequences were devastating for everyone,”
said Mr Pickles. The family did not want to stay in the same house and all went to different addresses. They all got back together
in Billington Gardens, but David was not coping with his grief and neither was his father,” said Mr Pickles. “His father was drinking
heavily and David was upset to see what was happening to him. He was distraught at the manner of his mother’s death and the thousands of questions that could never be answered.” Mr Pickles said Tupling did not know how to help his father or himself. “On the day in question,
there had been an argument. He deliberately took his sis ter’s car, drove a short dis tance and waited for the police to arrive. It was a cry for help and, in a strange way, it has helped. “I t brought his dad up
sharp and the day after he went to see his doctor and is now' getting professional help. My client has also been to see his doctor,” added Mr Pickles.
THE ship may have been on dry land, but last Saturday’s “18th Century Dinner with the Cap ta in ”, at St Mary’s Centre, Church Street, Clitheroe, was a sailaway success. The sum of £400 was raised to
support St Mary’s Centre and help it continue to be an arts and com munity facility for Clitheroe and the Ribble Valley. The event, put together by
Fo r c e , the St Mary’s Centre Friend’s group, took place in a re creation of the great cabin of a Georgian warship, with many guests dressing in period costume. Nominally set in the year 1784,
the menu was developed from orig inal recipes and made as authentic as possible by Mrs Jill Crocker, who acted as ship’s cook.
A sailaway success for all hands People came from as far away as
Birmingham and Wakefield to take part and entertainment was provided by Joe Stead and Kim- ber’s Men, a shanty crew from Wakefield. Amateur maritime historian
Steve Ragnall, who hosted the event as Captain for the evening, said: “It was a remarkable event due to the dedication of a number of Fo r c e members, notably Charles and Pat Pearce, Jill Crocker and Laura Bailey. The money \vill be used to continue the renovation of facilities to' meet modern needs”. The next FoRCE sponsored
event is on Saturday, February 26th, at 7-30 p.m. Our picture shows Mr Steve Ragnall and friends. (T230105/6)
