j . ' i 22 Clitheroe Advertiser & Times, January 27th, 2005 Former mayoress dies by Julie Magee

FORMER Clitheroe mayoress Mrs Hilda Sharpies has died at the age of 99.

her 100th birthday in May, was born at Lever Bridge, near Bolton, to James and Martha Jenkinson. She moved to Clitheroe with her sister, Eveline, now 95, and her late brother, Phillip, when she was 12 years old after her father secured a job in Clitheroe. At the age of 13, Mrs Sharpies began to

work at a gentlemen’s outfitters in Moor Lane before working as a weaver at Thorn- ber's Mill where she stayed until 1936. On July 18th, 1931, she married William

(Bill ) Sharpies, first li\ing in Derby Street, before making their home in Balmoral .Avenue. They had two children, Valerie, and the late, Doi'een. and were later lucky enough to have five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. During her lifetime, Mrs Sharpies also

worked in her sister, Eveline’s, bakery, which used to be in Corporation Stix-et, and at Coleman’s, a women's clothes shop and haberdashers. But it was from 1960 to 1962 that Mrs

Sharpies was propelled into public life after her husband, who was then a local council lor, was made mayor and last alderman of Clitheroe. Her daughter, Valerie, recalled how even

as Mayoress of Clitheroe, her mother was still the same dowm-to-earth character. “She used to attend functions such as the

mayor’s coffee morning dressed in her chains and would be found with her sleeves rolled up and washing up the pots in the back,” she reminisced. To add to their busy schedule, the com

munity stalwarts were members of the organisation Toe H, for more than 60 years and used to have regular meetings. Mrs Sharpies was also an honorary mem-

ber of Clitheroe Parish Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society, as well as a founder member of the Old People’s Club, now the Pendle Club in Lowergate, Clitheroe, and the first chairman of the Friends of Clithoroe Ho.spital Committee A regular church-goer t hroughout her life,

she was the oldest worshipping member of St Paul’s Church, Low Moor. She was also a founder member of St Paul’s Mothers Union. However, what many people will remem

ber Mrs Sharpies for is plajnng the piano for ballet teachers Miss Margaret Sandham, who used to hold lessons at Clitheroe’s Unit ed Reformed Church and for Miss Mary Waddington, who held lessons in St Mary’s Parish Hall. “Even w'hen she stopped play ing the piano at SO years old, she still used to go and brew up for them,” Valerie added. For the last five years, Mrs Sharpies lived

with Valerie and son-in-law, Ian, at their home in Clitheroe. She died peacefully on Friday after a short illness. A funeral will be held at St Paul’s Church,

Low Moor, at 10-30 a.m. tomorrow followed by cremation at Accrington. Friends and relatives will meet up at the Old Post House in Clitheroe afterwards.
