son Matthey Catalysts plant wanted to do something “a bit special” to raise funds for their local East Lancashire Hospice. They came up with the 172-mile coast-to-coast cycling challenge, which they completed over three days in September. Now they have handed over £622 to a
delighted Mr Hany Grayson, head of fund raising at the hospice. Zara Chaplin was one of the two women and nine men who took on
the tough coast-to-coast ride, which took them through mountainous terrain via Kendal, Penrith, Hartside, Consett and finally arriving after an exhausting three days in Sunderland. She said: “ Everything went really well,
but the second day was very challenging. We had about seven hours of one long climb after another, but we all managed to keep
going. “Luckily the weather was really nice for all
three days and we had a few sunburned faces
at the end of it.” Accepting the money on behalf of the Blackburn-based hospice, Mr Grayson said:
“We are extremely grateful to Johnson Matthey and the members of the cycling team, first for choosing the hospice as benefi ciaries.” The East Lancashire Hospice cares for ter
