THIS year marks the 60th anniversary of the end of World War II and is the last major chance to thank all those ordinary men and women who went on to do extraordinary things 60 years ago.
Not just those on the front lines, but all the millions of people who worked hard at home and abroad for the war effort and to remember all those who played a part in the hard-won victory. But the Poppy Appeal is not just about remembering the sacrifice of World War II or the millions who suffered as a result of World War 1. It is also a timely reminder of today's heroes, all those who serve in conflicts and peace-keeping missions across the globe, who may need The Royal British Legion in the future.
During 2005, the Royal British Legion conducted a wide- ranging survey of the needs of the veteran community. This has highlighted a huge and increasing demand for our services. Our welfare division has developed a three year plan that will see:
• A 20% increase in the number of beneficiaries receiving advice or practical help.
• Providing more day care and higher level care places at our homes.
• Reach around 5,000 people with care visits, providing help with odd jobs such as improving door locks or mending fences.
• Expand our work with the nation's schools, enabling more students to visit battle fields and war cemeteries here and abroad.
