Make sure you can be seen
HELLO and welcome to this week’s edition of Whalley Beat.
• Be Safe Be Seen This Winter As the clocks have now gone back, the
nights have started to draw in much earlier, making children even more vulnerable on our roads. It was therefore very reassiuing to see many children leaving Whalley pri mary School this week sporting their new high-visibility vests. Children in Year 3 should also be wearing
their Bee Safe, Bee Seen Super Hero Bee reflective and fluorescent stickers, which we hope will encourage them to wear reflective material in the dark, and fluorescent mate rials during the day. Road traffic crashes are the leading cause
of accidental death and injury to children and speeding motorists are a high risk to children. During the trip to school, traffic is at its busiest and consequently poses the most risk to children. The accident rate for children peaks
between 8 a.m. and 9 a.m., when the chil dren are leaving for school, and again at 3 p.m. when they leave. Speed is also a major contributory factor
in one out of every three road traffic crashes that occur on Lancashire’s Roads each year. We can help prevent some of these accidents by driving safely particularly during poor visibility and poor weather and by being safe and seen whilst walking through our streets.

are treating as suspicious. A number of let ters have recently been received in this area via Air Mail, from a company named Wor thington Clark Pty Ltd, based in Sydney, Australia. The letters, which are addressed personally, include an approximate date of birth and go on to explain that they have knowledge of an asset, which appears to be lost, unclaimed or forgotten. The company states that you may be entitled to claim all or part of the asset, which has a current value of around 8,000 Australian dollars. However, before revealing the particulars
of the asset in question, they ask for agree ment that they are paid a quarter of the net amount successfully claimed. There is a telephone number and e-mail
address that can be contacted as well as a website that seems quite legitimate. At no point does the company request a payment up-front. However, a form does need to be signed and it is important that any action that is taken is done so with caution, or not at all. If you receive any letters such as this over the next few weeks, please let me know. You can e-mail me at: jason.taylor@lan-

m.p.h. and Coun. Holtom fears pedestrians could be injured by fast travelling motorists if the speed limit is not reduced. He is now calling for reduced
speed limits and more warning signs to warn motorists to slow down and to prevent someone being injured. “Cars are travelling far too fast
through a small village like. Lang ho,’’ said Coun. Holtom. “About 18 months ago, county
council officials carried out a traffic measurement operation and the findings were shocking. In some
cases, certain cars were found to be regularly travelling at 70 m.p.h. and various other high speeds in a 60 m.p.h zone. “Part of the road has no pave
ment and there is a danger of pedes trians being hit. Therefore, the speed limit should he dropped to at most 40 m.p.h.’’ Coun. Holtom’s plea has won the
backing of members of Billington and Langho Parish Council, who for years have been campaigning for traffic calming measures in the vil lage. Billington, Old Langho and
Brockhall Village councillor Carl Eric Ross, said: “Speeding traffic on Old Langho Road is an on-going problem. “For years, concerned residents
have complained to Lancashire County Council to reduce the speed limit, but to no avail. “There are no signs to show what the speed limit is. The situation has
■
got worse over the years since the introduction of Brockhall Village. Some people with high-powered cars have been spotted speeding at 80 m.p.h. I t is frightening. “More people th an ever have
been complaining about the volume of cars and speed of traffic in the area. “Without a doubt, the speed
limit needs to he reduced, however once reduced, it should be enforced with may be the installation of a speed camera.” In response to th e concerns
expressed, a county council spokesman said: “We have looked a t the number of pedestrian and type of vehicle movements in the area. In light of this, there will be a joint meeting on Thursday, Novem ber 24th, between Lancashire Coimty Council, Ribble Valley Bor ough Council and the police, where a 40 m.p.h. speed limit will be rec ommended.”

Acorn Steiner Kindergarten is inviting families vrith children aged up to eight to come to the Abbey at 4-30 p.m. There they will make a procession of light and song, taking their lanterns around the
