New family takes over village PO

by Faiza Afzaal

ST U N N IN G countryside and th e peaceful tranquility of the Ribble Valley were enough to change one cou p le ’s career for

good. Paul and Laura Hunt, both 43,

(pictured), are the new faces behind the counter of the oldest shop in Britain - Chipping Post Office and Craft Centre. The couple, from Peterstone in

South Wales, took over the business at the end of August from previous owners David and Andrew Cawley. Paul and Laura, who have two

children-Alex (11), and eight-yep old Edward, say they fell in love with the Trough of Rowland and the vil lage of Chipping, which encouraged them to move to the area of Out standing Natural Beauty. “It is an absolutely beautiful

area,” explains Paul. “For 20 years we had been living in Peterstone - a small place between Newport and

Cardiff. “I worked for a company, which

made silicone chips and Laura trained as a computer analyst. She stopped work to look after the chil dren and re-trained as a primary school teacher. “However, finding work proved very difficult and we decided to look

for a business, which we could run together. “The post office and craft centre

was advertised in the newspaper and we decided to come and have a look around the area. “We were very impressed by the business and by the picturesque

area.” Although the couple had never

visited the Ribble Valley, they say they are very familiar with rural life as Paul was brought up in a village in Devon and Laura, from Colch ester, in a rural area of Essex. Since their arrival in Chipping, they say they have settled in well

and have received a warm and friendly welcome from the locals. They are enjoying running the busi ness, which at 337 years old holds the record as Britain’s longest-con tinuing retail premises. Paul added he has been able to

explore the forest beauty spot and discover what a beautiful place the Ribble Valley is. The couple are not planning on

making any major changes yet, but in future they have plans to intro duce tea rooms depending on plan ning consent and agreement from the Brabins Trust. (B011105/3)

SILVER polish is bought in bulk at a Clitheroe company where the trophies

and awards just keep on coming. The latest addition to the creaking

display case at Farmhouse Fare is an impressive silver trophy for Outstand ing Small Business of the Year”. It was awarded as part of the IGD

Food Industry Awards, sponsored by retail giant Morrisons Supermarkets The IGD Awards are among the most

prestigious in the food and grocery industry, recognising excellence in com

panies of all sizes. They were presented at a glittering

annual dinner and awards ceremony, held at London’s Royal Lancaster House and attended by an audience of more than 500 distinguished guests. Helen Colley is the founder and man

aging director of Farmhouse Fare, which makes a range of delicious pud

dings. She commented: “We had a fantastic

night with great company, food and champagne and to be honest we are ecstatic to have won such a high profile

award. “It's been a wonderful year for Farm

house Fare Ltd and it is fantastic that all the hard work and dedication put in

by the team here is recognised out there in the food industry.” Whoever polishes all those trophies

could see their workload increase even more this month, when Farmhouse Fare is in the running for two awards at the National Business Awards. Our picture shows Helen Colley (left)

Ex-employee is charged with theft

A FORMER employee at a Whalley pub has appeared before Blackburn magis trates charged in connection with an alleged bogus burglary in which he claimed to have been violently attacked. John William Yeoman (19), of Kemple

View, Clitheroe, is alleged to have dam aged a window at the Whalley Arms, in King Street, and stolen between £1,800

and £2,000, telling his employer, Guy Cornwell, that the money had been stolen in a violent burglary. Yeoman is charged with stealing the money, attempting to pervert the course of justice and damag ing the window. His case was committed to Preston

Crown Court and he was granted bail in the meantime.
