Alan Titchmarsh enjoys a barnstorming Christmas

HE may be more noted for his horti cultural skills than his acting prowess, but gardening guru Alan Titchmarsh (pictured) says he is a “totally frus

trated ham” underneath it all. Luckily, he gets a chance to express his

theatrical side at Christmas, when he is allowed to tread the boards a t home. The bam at the side of his house in Hampshire is converted into a makeshift mini-theatre where family and friends join in an evening of entertainment, including slapstick pan tos, poetry readings and a host of other

entertainment. “I ’ve cobbled it together every Christ

Safety check for the toys

IT may not always be easy to buy the latest toy trend, but it is easy to make sure that the toys you buy for Christmas are safe. Around 60 per cent of all toy sales take

place during the run-up to Christinas, so it is worth reviewing the British Toy & Hobby Association’s guidelines to make sure the presents you buy this year bring happiness to your children and peace of mind for you. The BTHA represents over 90 per cent of

toys manufactured and supplied in the UK and its primary concern is to ensure that all toys supplied to the UK market reach the highest safety standards. When choosing toys, consumers should always; • Look for the Lion Mark - This friendly

lion’s face within a triangle is a symbol of safety and quality and is carried on the packaging of BTHA members’ toys, indi-

!•' t’jg, eating that the toy conforms to BS EN 71. p i® • Use reputable toy shops, department

stores and familiar retail outlets. Look out for shops displaying the Approved Lion Mark Retailer Scheme logo. • Avoid fly-by-night street traders and

fairs where the origin and quality of the toys cannot be guaranteed. Never buy from a dubious outlet simply because it has the only available Teletubby. If the toy is not genuine, not only could it be illegal but it could also be dangerous. • Follow age and safety guidelines on the

packaging, ensuring th a t you buy a toy suitable for your child’s age and ability. Look in particular for toys carrying this symbol as the contents of these toys could pose a choking hazard to children under 36

months. • Do your own tests. Is the toy well

made? Securely p u t together? With iio sharp edges? And always ask for advice in the shop if you are uncertain.
