Retiring John earns service recognition

TH E clerk to Clitheroe Town Council, Mr J oh n W ells, has been thanked for his service to the community. The Rotary Club of Clitheroe has

presented Mr Wells, who retires from his role later this month, with a service recognition award. Rotary President Mr Mike

Watkins said: “Ever since he has been town clerk, Mr Wells has been a great help in assisting the Rotary

Club. He has worked especially hard on th e new ‘Welcome to Clitheroe’ signs. “The Rotary club might have

paid for them, but Mr Wells worked very hard sorting out highways issues and the finer details.” Mr Watkins added: “He has done

a lot for the local community in general.” The award was presented to Mr

Wells during a buffet lunch held in the Mayor’s Parlour to celebrate

the erection of the new signs, which were unveiled on February 23rd - the 100th anniversary of Rotary International. Commenting on the award, Mr

Wells said: “It is an honour to be recognised in this way. “A lot of the hard work done does not get recognised - so I appreciate

this.” Pictured on the left is Mr Wells

being presented with the award by Mr Watkins, (s)

POETRY was the theme for pupils of St Mary’s Primary S ch o o l, Osbaldeston, who dressed up for the day as their favourite characters. The fun day, organised by

literacy co-ordinator Lorna Boase, was in aid of World

Book Day. The children, who partici

pated in quizzes and took part in a parade, were also visited by parents, governors and friends of th e school, who went around each classroom reading their favourite poems. Our picture shows Charlie

Pupils have night fever for book day

UNIFORMS were replaced with comfy pyjamas, slippers and dressing gowns for pupils at St Mary’s RC Pri mary School, Sabden. The youngsters, and also s taff,

turned up in their nightwear as part of the bedtime stories theme to mark World Book Day. Teacher Miss Jennifer Taylor said:

“We have a different theme every year to mark World Book Week. “The pupils brought in their

favourite books and we had storytime sessions throughout the day - it was certainly more comfortable in our pyja mas!” (s)

Young readers are all buddy-buddy!

READING is a great way to pass the time when you are alone, but sharing a book with friends is great fun too. Children at Barrow Primary School cele

brated World Book Day by pairing up with a “reading buddy” from a different class, mak ing new friends as they turned the pages. To add to the fun, they also went to school

dressed as their favourite book characters. Our picture shows some of the children in costume, (s)
