saw man-of-the-match Robbie Read through on goal, and his driven low shot beat the keeper. The ball stopped in the goalmouth

who were on top, pressing hard, with Luke Nolan and Andrew Baron, who both had fantastic games, seeing their

shots go wide. Wolves Under 1 6 s .............. .................0 Huncoat Utd ..................................... 5 WOLVES didn’t turn up for the first hour as they slipped to defeat. Huncoat commanded midfield and

put the Wolves defence under tremen dous pressure. Kino and Simon Worthington

defended resolutely, but it was only a matter of time before Huncoat took the lead from a comer. Unfortunately Wolves then gifted

Huncoat a penalty, which was slotted away with aplomb, leaving the Clitheroe side 2-0 down at half-time. Even a stirring half-time talk from

manager Mick Scriven could not raise the lads, and Huncoat added a third five minutes after the interval. And as the fourth crossed the line,

some pride and passion stirred, and Wolves created some chances. Tim Swarbrick hit a rasping shot

from 25 yards th a t slipped past the post, and Dean Gudgeon posed some questions for the Huncoat defence. However, it was to no avail, and Hun coat finished the game with a fifth 10

WOLVES returned to action after a three-week lay off with a comfortable win against a plucky Ossy side to main tain second place in the league. Wolves shook off their rustiness to

get their passing game going, making the most of a gopd playing surface. Midway through the first half, some

good passing between Zeno Leoni and Daniel Mcgrath released Alex Mullin down the left, and he produced a terrif ic cut-back which Toni Farrar met first time to score a fine goal.

^ ^ This gave Wolves more confidence,

arid they took control of the match with the McGrath-Leoni combination again releasing Mullin, who this time , fired a left foot shot past the keeper to give Wolves a 2-0 lea.d. Ossy kept battling and managed to

breach the Wolves back line on two occasions, but some excellent covering by Robert Douglas and Paul Coward

saved the day. In the second half. Wolves created a

glut of chances, with some fine saves denying James Banks and Michael

Tomlinson. The game became end to end as Ossy

continued to battle, and keeper Jack

Taylor had to dive at centre forward’s feet to deny what seemed a certain goal. This seemed to spur Wolves on, but

they continued to spurn chances before winger Mullin started a run on the halfway line and fired a right foot shot into the top corner to make it 3-0. Wolves then took their fopt off the

THE Wolves suffered their worst defeat for many seasons, but can have no com plaints.

aspect of the game, being more organ ised, more determined and more attack minded. The Wolves’ first shot at goal didn’t

come until midway through the second half, while the team seemed to have no shape and the players were incapable of stringing passes together. Goalkeeper McGrath made some fine

saves to prevent the team from'conced- ing more first half goals, and along with man-of-the-match Ainsworth, also helped to prevent the defeat being even more emphatic in the second half. Wolves Under 12 Girls ..................... 6 Accrington Girls

Dolphins get taste of action

A NUMBER of Clitheroe Dolphins swimmers had their first taste of Inter Club competition at Daisyfield Swimming Pool in Blackburn for the

• first Micro-League Gala of the 2005 season. And the club’s nine to

12-year-olds rose to the occasion magnificently. Competing against a

very strong Blackburn team, and teams from the Leyland and Rosegrove, they did well to finish in second place with 117 points. Winners Blackburn,

accumulated 177 points, with Rosegrove on 99 points and Leyland on 92. The Dolphins can now

look forward to the remaining three fixtures with a real chance of bet tering last year's third place league finish. Individual winners for

Clitheroe were 11-year- olds Anna Carey, in the 50m breaststroke, and Thomas Carter in the 50m backstroke and 50m Freestyle. The relay teams were

big successes as well as the 12-year-old girls freestyle team of Kara Singleton, Naomi Williams, Alicia Walker and Victoria Rodgers won their event. As did the 11-year-old

boys freestyle team of Luke Tasker, Christopher Grant, Jacob Abrahams and Thomas Carter. Then the same 12-year-

old girls returned in the win the medley relay team.

Locals’ fine win

CLITHEROE B moved off the bottom of the Blackburn and District

■ Badminton League First Division with their second win of the season. And surprisingly it

came against local rivals Brockhall, who are riding high in second place. Brockhall were unfortu

nate in th a t they were forced to play with players missing, and Clitheroe, while losing all eight games played, were able to make some useful scores in reply. This temporarily moves

them off the bottom, but new basement side St Philip’s have a game in hand. In the Third Division,

Independent B climbed away from the relegation zone with a victory over mid-table Clitheroe C, drawing on games but fin ishing as technical losers by 20 aces.
