SONGSTERS from a Clitlieroe school stole the show at the annual Clitheroe Mayor's "At Home." Ribblesdale High School
Technology College pupils were invited to provide the now tra ditional musical entertainment for more than 100 guests at the event, held in Ribble Valley Borough Council's chamber. A flautist began the proceed
ings before the school's singing group took over. Following refreshments,
three members of the group sang songs from the shows - proving that the town's operat ic society has plenty of scope for future productions on its own doorstep. The soloists were unfazed by
the number of people present, including many civic digni taries from neighbouring authorities, and gave a clear, confident and professional ren dition of songs from shows old and new. They were introduced and
thanked by Clitheroe Mayor Coun. Mrs Joan Knight, who with her Mayoress, Mrs Helen

JUDGING of the colour slide classes of Ribblesdale Camera Club's Annual Competition produced two pleasant surpris es.
Firstly the very healthy
entry of 121 slides in total over the four classes and, even more important, the consistently high standard of the entries. The competition - always a
high point in the club’s calen dar - was judged this year by Mr John Day, from Leyland. The portrait section was con
sidered first, resulting in a win for Ken Geddes' "Javanese mother and children", a pleas ant triangular pattern of the family photographed in almost pastel colours. This was followed by Mike
Bartle's "Like father, like son", a colourful picture of a carnival

clown and his young lad. In third was another slide by Ken Geddes entitled "Cave Diver", a dramatic picture of the diver surfacing. Twenty-four slides were con
sidered in the Record section. The winner was "Mooserspoore Dam, Austria" by Ken Geddes. This was a high -viewpoint shot of this slim, sweeping structure, but with enough tourists strolling about to give scale and interest. "Bungee Jumper", by Steuart
Kellington, was a superb slide with a pictorial approach and was placed second. In third place was Trevor Marklew's "Boundary Stone". Natural History also had 24
entrants. Again a slide by Ken Geddes was awarded first place. This was "Tiger Spider", a
colourful Indonesian beasty, not recommended as a house hold pet! Two entries by Steuart
Kellington achieved second and third. These were "Sea Lions" and "Wandering Albatross", both beautiful pictures. The position of the two sea lions on the rocks was especially attrac tive and the colours on the wet coats were lovely. Stephen Robinson's "Wheatear", in fourth, was highly praised and must have been very close to a higher place. The Open section produced
56 entries of the highest calibre. A very simple picture of a small waterfall by Mike Caddy, called "Sun Signature", was a high class image. It was a good demonstration of how being at the right place at the right time
- and having a seeing eye - can create a picture which could compete at any level. An architectural shot by
Joan Whittaker of County Hall, London, was placed sec ond. The judge liked the curv ing shape of the building; the passers-by giving scale to the scene. Another of Mike Caddy's wonderful landscapes took third place. This was "Eternal Land". Next Tuesday will be the
judging of the annual print competition by Christine Wid- dell, from Staleybridge. Chris tine is Secretary of the Lan cashire and Cheshire Photo graphic Union and one of the best judges in the North West. She is herself an expert on cre ative digital photography.
