“ANTONY AND CLEOPATRA” at The Royal Exchange, Manchester, until April 9th. (Box office: 0161 8339833)

Weekendplus Sponsored by Plan your

week ahead with Duncan Smith

including Weekend TV Ken's folk club visit

A GUITARIST, singer, songwriter and producer from Preston is appear ing at Longridge Folk Club on Tuesday at 8-30 p.m. Artist Ken Nicol’s

music covers the spec trum from blues to rock, and effortlessly takes in folk, jazz, ragtime, bal

lads and more along the way. Ken was a member of the legendary Albion Band until 2001 when he left in order to spend more time on solo pro jects. Longridge Folk Club

holds meetings on the first and third Tuesday of each month at 8-30 p.m.

IT is Cleopatra, archety pal seductive Egyptian queen, who has always entranced us, but in Bra- ham Murray’s stunning production of Anthony and Cleopatra, I found myself fascinated by Antony, a truly Shake spearean tragic hero who is destroyed by his love for the capricious queen. Tom Mannion’s Antony

dominates the sage and towers above the slighter, conniving Octavius Cae sar (Steven Robertson) and he conveys the full depth of Antony’s despair at the realisation of how his love has made him betray his honour as a Roman. I felt bereft after his

death, although Josette Bushell-Mingo’s exotic, energetic Cleopatra dies dramatically

and

poignantly, well support ed by her two loyal women, Charmian (Sarah Paul) and Iras (Gugu

Mbatha-Raw). An accomplished cast takes us through the complex power struggles and bat tles. The sea battle is real ly spectacular. Terence Wilson is a bluff, soldierly Enobarbus, who softens in wonder as he gives his famous description of the first sight of Cleopatra’s barge. Johanna Bryant’s

design is stunning, con trasting the soft golden light and costumes of Egypt with the cold silver of Rome. Antony’s change from military uniform to flowing eastern silks clear ly marks the difference between the two cultures, reinforced by every detail. A world well lost for

love? Perhaps, but the characters are striving for power over a huge empire and there is a grandeur about Shakespeare and this play that continues to captivate us. The programme notes

give a good introduction and background for those unfamiliar with classical history and I recommend this as an opportunity to see one of the great plays by the incomparable Bard. PIPPA MUNRO

retired English general - played by Ronnie Barker in an all-too-rare screen

appearance - a young Ger man photographer and an eight-year-old American girl orphaned in the blast. Surrounded by lush scenery in an idyllic loca tion, the group forms an unexpectedly strong bond while convalescing. However, the ir peace

and harmony are upset by the arrival of the girl's overly staid uncle (Chris Cooper), as well as the unsettling possibilities of the explosion’s origins as raised by an Italian inves tigator (Giancarlo Gianni- ni).

Based on William

Trevor’s book of the same name, this is an enjoyably unpredictable film with a superb cast.
