MEMBERS of H u r s t Green's newly-formed tsu n am i ap p e a l have met to discuss plans for their gala bring and buy sale on Sun day, February 6th. Already contributions are pouring
in and the committee is confident that visitors of all ages will find stalls to interest them. Among the generous gifts donated
so far is a George Foreman Lean Grilling Machine, and other keenly-
priced bargains await the shopper on the bring-and-buy stall. The high-quality baking associated
with Hurst Green events will be avail able, both on the cake stall and as refreshments, organised by members of the WI. Children and staff from St Joseph's
Primary School in the village are organising a variety of games. The children, moved by the plight
of the Asian children shown on televi sion, have also decided to run a prayer board, where people pay a small fee to add a line to a prayer for the tsuna
mi's victims. A tombola, plus toy and book stalls, will also feature in the event, being held in the village's Memorial Hall, starting at 1 p.m. Leaflets will soon be going through
local letterboxes detailing the event and also asking for volunteers. Those willing to help are asked to contact Mrs Mary Kay on 01254 826304. There are several drop-off points
around the village for contributors to leave items before the event. Please contact one of the following
to arrange a convenient time: Mrs Cath Poloczek (01254 826 527); Mrs
Kath Molyneux (01254 826851); Mrs Sue Nutter (01254 826 674); Mrs Nancy Bailey (01254 903); Mrs Helen McKell (01254 826 179). Good quality items are asked for, such as unwanted Christmas presents, plus baking, bottles, small prizes and so
on. Villagers keen to help victims of the
Boxing Day disaster formed the Hurst Green and District Tsunami Appeal earlier this month, with the plan being to find a project th a t Hurst Green and its surrounding area can adopt for the foreseeable future.
Despite considerable research
there is as yet no definite project, as most charities are still focusing on dealing with the immediate after- math, but inquiries are continuing to find something suitable. In the meantime, the money raised
will be kept in an interest-bearing account.
Various village groups have already
agreed to hold events over the coming month and the committee is confi dent that the appeal will involve the whole of the local community in fund raising.
Thumbs up to charity celebration
SPICY Indian food, fun and games and state-of-the-art prizes were in store for people who attended an Eid chari ty dinner in aid of the tsunami victims. The varied programme, held at the
Balti Spice Restaurant, in Clitheroe, was organised by members of the town’s Medina Islamic Education Cen tre.
The event saw more than 100 people,
including civic dignitaries flock to the restaurant and raise more than £2,817. Staff from the restaurant boosted the fund-raising by donating their wages for the evening. Among the guests present were Kib
ble Valley councillors. Divisional Com mander of Lancashire Constabulary, Chief Supt. David Mallaby, the Lib

SABDEN schoolboy Thomas Turn er celebrated his eighth birthday on Saturday. His party consisted of surprises,
fun and games, music, enjoyment and laughter, but the only thing missing was presents. This was because the kind-heart
ed child, moved by the appalling scale of the Asian tsunami disaster, asked his friends to join him in help ing the countless victims by donat ing towards the appeal instead of buying him presents. Footie-mad Thomas, pictured,
who attends the village’s St Mary’s RC Primary School, raised £150 and is pleased that his money will help the needy. His parents, Mr and Mrs Andrew
and Rachel Turner, who run “Deli cious” - the deli bar in Whalley Road, said: “I t was Thomas’ idea to raise cash for the tsunami victims.

at 9 a.m. They will then ride to
Stoke and Derby before all meeting up a t the National Motorcycle Museum in Solihull, West Midlands, at around 1 p.m. An auction of items kindly donated by com panies and racing teams will take place at the museum with some racing stars attending the event. For more information

Denis' prospective parliamentary can didate for the Ribble Valley, Julie Young, and officials from several well- known organisations. During the evening, guests tucked
into a mouthwatering three-course meal with a mixed selection of tradi tional Asian sweets for dessert. The fund-raising event also featured
a series of quizzes and games, which resulted in guests pitting their wits against each other to win attractive prizes, kindly donated by local busi nesses as well as an auction of hampers. One of the organisers, Mr Sheraz
Arshad, who is also secretary of the town’s Islamic centre, said he was pleased to see people of different faiths gathered to support the tsunami vie-
tims, who had lost everything in the Boxing Day tragedy. He commented: “Not only did the
charity night raise funds in aid of the tsunami appeal, but also united people from different faiths. “It was very nice to see special guests
from Preston, Blackburn and the local community under one roof enjoying an eventful evening and helping a worthy cause. “I would like to thank all the people
who attended, especially the many local businesses who supported the Eid charity dinner.” Our picture shows Ribble Valley

PUPILS from a Clitheroe pri mary sch o o l were given th e chance to le a rn a b o u t th e world of work during an indus

CE School, was titled “Get a Life” and featured representa tives from local businesses who each gave a presentation to the children on their industry. Organised by Mrs Christine
Taylor, business links and envi ronmental co-ordinator, the aim of the day was to incorporate issues which relate to the school’s healthy status. She said: “We try to promote a healthy lifestyle for our children
and encourage them to keep the planet healthy. I t is their future and we hope this gives them the opportunity to think about what they could do with it.” Attended by Clitheroe Town
Mayor Coun. Joan Knight'and the Ribble Valley Mayor and Mayoress Coun. Charles Wark- man and his wife, Ruth, the school had visitors from at least 12 dif ferent businesses. They discussed a wide range of
topics including food, exercise and recycling. Coun. Knight, who joined a
class to see a presentation by Gra ham P itt from the Lancashire Wildlife Trust, was impressed by what she learnt. She commented afterwards: “It has been a very interesting day.
which I believe is beneficial to the children. “They are learning about new
things which they wouldn’t nor mally be tau g h t in the class room.” During the day, six pupils were
also given the chance to act as reporters. Following a few tips by
Clitheroe Advertiser and Times reporter Tracy Johnson, the chil dren each wrote a report on a dif ferent industry and together pro duced an article for their school newspaper. Our picture shows the roving
