Tablers rise to the occasion and win

HAVING already won the Area Football Competition, Clitheroe Round Table were in high spirits in anticipation of the next area sport ing event. Eager sportsmen among the

Clitheroe Tablers had watched in dismay as the Area Cricket Compe tition was rained off and then the squash tournament also fell by the wayside, so they were overjoyed when a 10-pin bowling tournament was arranged in January. Due to the short notice given by

the organisers, the team was “cob bled together” at the last minute, but the lads were confident that the inspirational leadership of captain Craig Nicholls would see them through. Pre-match preparations, however, got off to the worst possi ble start when the four-man squad had to sprint through the streets of Blackpool due to a mix-up over the directions. They arrived in the nick of time

and bowling commenced with the s ta r of an earlier Round Table

BEFORE dealing with Tetrobol, Ted, and Tag, Clitheroe Speakers’ Club and visitors from Castle Speakers Club (Blackburn) dealt with a fairly difficult topics session devised and chaired by club president Robert Morpeth. Designed to give practice

bowling night, Paul Harrison, set ting the tone for the evening with a booming strike right down the mid dle. Next up was the more considered,

thoughtful, approach of the team rookie Robert Sellers, whose less powerful, but ultimately more accu rate technique brought great suc cess in the converting of spares department. Up next was seasoned profession

al and last year’s sports officer Richard Pallister, whose spinning and curling efforts were often a lit tle hit-and-miss, but who also bagged the only “turkey” (three strikes in a row) of the night and a massive score of 160 in the first game. This was followed by the anchor

of the team, Craig Nicholls, who as always seemed more focused on how hard he could throw the ball than how many pins he actually knocked over. The tactic was successful though and a score of 138 nicely supported

Rick's 160 and contributed to an overall team score of 506. Having posted the highest score

of the first round the Clitheroe team then had two choices - to rest on their laurels and see if anyone could beat their score in the second round, or to redouble their efforts and try to improve more. They chose the more challenging path and a massive individual score of 180 by the s ta r of the evening, Robert Sellars, contributed to a competition winning team score of 538 and won the man himself a cou ple of bottles of cheap bubbly for the highest individual score. Spokesman Rob Stevenson com

mented that, despite short notice in many area events, Clitheroe Round Table always manage to rise to the challenge and with a focused approach is proving a formidable force within area competitions. Pictured from left are: Richard

Pallister, Craig Nicholls, Paul Har rison and Richard Sellars with the trophy and champagne, (s)

Attention! Less tergiversate! Parish priest is speaker Then came the "Call My

good-humoured audience participation everyone man aged a response - although one member approached the lectern the long way round th e room thus gaining an extra 10 seconds thinking time.
