R im in g to n ..................... 9 Burnley Boys’ Club. . . .4 RIMINGTON romped to their first win of the sea son thanks to a first half performance that totally took the game away from the visitors.

• Terry Braithwaite almost opened the scoring in the fifth minute when a run down the left by O'Neill resulted in his cross being headed out to the player manager, whose first-time shot narrowly missed the target. The home side didn't

tit-:

have long to wait though, as O'Neill's corner was headed in for an own goal by an Old Boys defender, under pressure from Mar tin Lawson. The lead was short

lived however, as Riming ton were caught on the break, and Kershaw was adjudged to have brought down a Burnley forward in the box, and the visi tors equalised from the spot. From here on though, Rimington played with

pace, power and some wonderful one-touch foot ball, leading to four goals in quick succession. O'Neill and Keighley

shot in off the post. Burnley pulled one

exchanged passes, before the latter whipped in a cross that Matt Coulter finished beautifully. Wes Clarion then for

aged forward from full back, only to be uncere moniously dumped to the floor, leaving Tom Bartlett to score from the spot. Another move involving

Clarkson had led to him releasing Terry Nelson, who unleashed an unstop pable drive past the star tled keeper. Jason Heald sped down

the right wing and cut into the box only to be upended, and Bartlett made no mistake for his second penalty. Coulter then grabbed

his second when he beat the off-side trap to finish with ease, and secured his hat-trick when a quick Braithwaite free kick sent him clear through to fire a

back before half-time with a header from a free kick that looped over the stranded Kershaw. The visitors then scored

again in the second half with a fierce left-foot drive, but the home side continued to press in search of more goals as Braithwaite struck the bar, and Bartlett twice came close to his hat- trick. Another long-range

effort saw the Burnley side score again to make it four, before Rimington upped a gear to see O'Neill curl home a free- kick, and a Clarkson run into the box ended with a fine strike from a narrow angle. Braithwaite was

delighted with the way his side played, particularly in creating so many chances despite having Mankowski, Watkins, Kay and Whalley away.

Fletcher and Heys on target in excellent draw for Readstone

READSTONE United Under 8s had an excellent 2-

Celtic at the weekend. The goals came from

Oscar Fletcher and Adam Heys, with Toby Mul- doon named man-of-the- match. Toby was also man-of-

the-match in the locals’ other game, .that saw them go down 3-0 to an experienced Huncoat United. Elsewhere the Under

CLITHEROE Lions con tinued their winning ways on Saturday as they reached the quarter-finals of the cup with a 5-1 win against Gargrave. However, they made

things difficult for them selves, as it remained 1-1 for much of the game. , Winger Conti broke the

deadlock early in the game with a well-taken goal, before Gargrave responded in like fashion. Spoils were shared until

the 65th minute, when striker Pinard headed

home from a Conti cross. Stand-in

referee

Michael Bank was severe ly tested throughout the match, as frayed tempers and late challenges threatened to end things in a 22-man brawl. However, it was the

Lions who kept a cool head, with winger Stod- dart posing a constant threat before finally deliv ering the killer crosses. Rick Holden put two

past the Gargrave keeper, intermitted by a fine 25- yard strike by man of the

match Gaughan. The game was much

closer than the scoreline suggested, however, with fine defending from James and Paul Clegg, alongside an important string of saves from the keeper. The Lions’ high fitness

levels told as Gargrave tired towards the end, with Avci and Gaughan running themselves into the ground. Manager Avci admitted

it was a close encounter, but no less satisfying. But, as league positions

suggest, it was a shame as the quarter final match should really have been ^ J the final of the cup, a final ^ that the Lions would like to reach, and win to add to their potential trophy cabinet at the end of the season. The Lions have been

drawn at home again against either Cononley Sports Reserves or Bradley Reserves on Sat urday, October 30th.

Hockey aces open new campaign with easy win

CLITHEROE & Hynd- burn Ladies’ Hockey Club had a perfect start to the new season with an easy win over local rivals Blackburn. The locals were 2-0

ahead inside of 10 min utes after Rachel Walms- ley scored the opener, and then set up Anna Griffiths for the second. Midway through the

second half, Blackburn began to play better hock ey and scored from a penalty corner. But Clitheroe fought

back immediately when Griffiths played a great ball through to Walmsley, who scored with ease. As the game wore on,

Clitheroe came under more pressure, but the defence held strong, and

Dog’s dismay at blank week

DOG Inn manager Simon Kerins bemoaned the water logged Haslingden pitch that caused the postponement of his side's game with Roebuck last Sunday. The Budweiser Boys had been hoping to take three

points into this weekend's tussle with Woodnook at the Memorial Park. Kerins said: “Although it was a poor week weather-

wise, in the end there were only two postponements. “This blank weekend has broken ihomentum up a lit

tle bit, but we are more than capable of making up for lost time this Sunday.”

Grindleton could have killed the game, but sub stitute Dakin missed a penalty 15 minutes from time, crowning an unchar acteristic performance. Grassington pulled

chances in the first half, Grindleton made this win a much more difficult task than it should have been. ' VI .1
