CHATTING to chart-topping boy band Busted was a dream come true for a Rib ble Valley schoolgirl. As well as meeting Matt, James and

Charlie, eight-year-old Alexandra King was able to see them sing during a small screen shoot in London. The band was in the capital to record

a performance of their single “Thunder- birds” for the Saturday morning chil dren’s show “Diggin’ I t”. Alexandra, a pupil at Waddington and

West Bradford CE Primary School, was given the chance to meet the group dur ing her school holidays. Together with her parents, Matthew

and Zoe, and her four-year-old sister Charlotte, she was staying with family

Said Mrs King: “She was excited about going to look round the studio, hut with the band being there it made her day, especially as she was able to get their autographs.” Now hitting the news headlines about

her summer meeting with Busted is the perfect icing on the cake for Alexandra - she celebrates her ninth birthday tomor

Clitheroe Advertiser & Times, September 30th, 2004 5 This cafe offers more than just a cuppa!

A WARM welcome is promised at the newest cafe in town - but this one promises to be different from any other. Starting today, the parishioners of

St Michael and St John's, Clitheroe, are running a series of video-based workshops exploring the Catholic faith, with the weekly meetings tak ing place within a cafe setting creat ed in the Parish Hall in Lowergate. No detail has been spared, with

tablecloths and candlelight promis ing to add to the authentic cafe - or

rather the CaPE — experience. Mr Peter Donnelly, one of the

organisers behind the venture, explained: "CaFE - Catholic Faith Exploration - aims to help people become more enthusiastic about their faith, and grow in their rela tionship with Jesus Christ.” Over the seven-week module, those

interested will be given the chance to watch videos exploring themes including God's love, forgiveness and the word of God. The course is designed to be relaxed in format.

with no obligation to attend every session, and with no workshops after the video. Designed by the Catholic Evange

lisation Services, the course has already been run successfully in more than 1,000 English parishes. Now local organisers hope that the

relaxed and welcoming format will encourage Catholics, and those inter ested in becoming Catholic, to come along and enjoy the ambience of the CaFE. The parishioners of S t Michael

Michael Maher (23) reacted to the girl’s false claim that she had been raped. His victim, Jason Parkington, suffered a

broken arm in the brutal attack that fol lowed. Mr Parkington claimed he was kicked repeatedly after being knocked to the floor and eventually passed out. When he came to there was nobody else around. Maher, of Alma Place, Clitheroe, pleaded

guilty to unlawfully and maliciously inflict ing grievous bodily harm on Mr Parkington. He was remanded on bail for the preparation of a pre-sentence report. Mr Neil White (prosecuting) said Mr

Parkington and the girl had spoken in the Dog Inn and she had walked off and headed towards Tesco. She claimed Mr Parkington followed and

pinned her against the wall before slapping her across the face. She said Maher wit nessed the blow and intervened.

“She saw Maher hit the other man in the

face, hut didn’t see anything else because she was crying and walked off,” said Mr White. When interviewed Maher, accepted

assaulting Mr Parkington but said he didn’t intend to cause as much damage as he did. “He said he saw red after the girl claimed

she had been raped,” added Mr White. Mr Kevin Preston (defending) said Maher

and a friend had been out drinking and were walking to another pub when they came across a female leaning against a wall crying. They listened to her allegation and con fronted Mr Parkington who described it as “ridiculous”. “My client accepts he saw red and

returned and punched Mr Parkington a few times,” said Mr Preston. “He also accepts that he continued to

assault him as he was lying on the groimd. My client can’t explain why he did it. This offence was completely out of character and I am sure you will give him the fullest credit.”

and S t John's have.already given their support to the venture, with the ladies’ group supplying the nibbles, the Knights of St Columba setting up the cafe, and Mr Vincent Murray, headmaster of the adjoining primary, being cast as cinema projectionist. Invitations have been sent out to

all the church's parishioners for the course, which starts at 8 p.m., but for others interested in attending, fur ther details are available from Mr Donnelly (01200 441081). ■ Helen McKell
