dead, forget it. The Nelson-based company creates masterpieces in stone at its Lomeshayc Industrial Estate base. And next Friday and Saturday, open days at


the Acom showroom will give the public the chance' to look round and see the amazing range of classy fireplaces on offer. The company also provides a wide range of


other stone items, including floors, garden ornaments and much more. Acom started out in 1990 as a specialist


stone merchants. At the time, with widespread demolition taking place in the area, 95 per cent of their turnover was in reclaimed stone and Just five per cent new. Now the figures are reversed. Joint founders Roger Mitchell and Shaun


Lloyd started creating stone fireplaces in 1994 and this led to the establishment of Acom Stone Fireplaces. Some of the fireplaces they have on show are imported, but majority are hand-made on site.


The range is remarkable. They have


.something to suit every pocket, and you can start from as little as £300 or so, and go up into the thousands. They can be Just as at home in a modem house as a traditional one. They use local stones like limestone and


sandstone, and they also import stone like travertine marble from Portugal and Turkey. Their business is now selling nationwide,


and has some top names among its customers, including motorcycle ace Carl Fogarty and the new “Doctor 'Who”, Christopher Eccleston. ■ Sales are helped by the new showroom,


which is the main reason for next week’s open day. That takes place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday. And while you are looking round the impressive range, your children can enjoy a bouncy castle. Acom also provides a professional fitting


service for its fireplaces. Flooring is available in a wide range of stone, including slate, quartzite, limestone, travertine marble and granite, suitable for bathrooms, kitchens or conservatories.


Of course, a fireplace is not much good


without some heat, and Acom supplies wood- burning and multi-fuel stoves, gas stoves, gas . fires and electric fires. Add to that mirrors, candles, candlesticks,


coal scuttles and fire-guards and you have a : complete array of fire accessories. Normal showroom hours are 9 a.m. to 5 ■
