RIOJA certainly repre sents the modem classics

of Spain. The other week, I went

Some modem classics Wine talk

to a tasting just of Rioja wines. Some 30 bodegas were represented, most with a white wine, a rose and three or four reds, so it was quite comprehensive. Of the whites, one that is

still a great favourite of mine is the 2001 CONDE DE VALDEMAR BLANCO FERMENTADO EN BAR- RICA. At £6.99, this rich, fruity, dry wine comes from the family owned Bodegas of Martinez- Bujanda; it is 100% 'Viura. Of the roses, or rosado as

they are known in Spain, my favourite was the 2003 MARQUES DE CACERES ROSADO at £5.39, perfect well-chilled on a hot day - as it was at that time. This dry wine made from a blend of 80% tempranillo and 20% garnache is a very clean, fruity wine with hints of strawberries and other red fruits. There were a lot of reds

to try, anything from £3.99 to over £50 a bottle, but for value and a winery I know very well. Bodegas

with wine writer Andrew Byrne

Riojanas produces some of the soundest and most rep resentative wines of the region, and it enjoys a long standing positive reputa tion based upon its excep tional Reserva and Gran Reserva wines. "We have some of its

wines on offer at the moment, including the very enjoyable 1998 MONTE REAL RESERVA at £7.69. This is made from a

blend of 80% tempranillo, 15% mazuelo and 5% gra- ciano. I t has a full fruit bouquet with nice rounded fruit flavours and hints of vanilla oak - perfect with lamb dishes.
