success? Well in theatrical terms
IT IS the 1660s and actor Ned Kynaston (Billy Crudup) is sitting pretty: the brightest star in Restoration theatre. Women are forbidden to
appear on stage, so the beautiful, brazen, bisexual Ned shines in all the great female roles. Maria (Claire Danes),
his loyal dresser, looks on with admiration - and just a touch of envy. But suddenly, Ned's
world is turned upside- down. Charles II is keen to spice up the theatre and see his persuasive young mistress Nell Gwyn take some applause. So he changes the law, banning cross-dressing male actors and sending Ned's once- glittering career into freefall. Reduced to doing drag
turns in a seedy tavern, Ned is finally rescued by Maria, who by now is starting to make a name for herself as an actress. Crudup and Danes join
a host of British stars in this dramatically different period romance.

ester's Parochial Hall had all of those in full measure at the young RATS (Ribchester Amateur The atrical Society) produc tion, indeed world pre miere, of Owen Phillips' “Measure of Success” . In truth, an old-fash
ioned love triangle and “back row of the chorus to leading lady” story, Owen sets his play with music in 1950s Hollywood. All the glamour and the
glitz of the big studio is there and, of course, the bitching and the backbit ing too. Two other themes are
represented as vital back ground to the period, the McCarthy witch hunts against “Reds under the Bed” and a scandalous press pack eager for sleazy stories. That Owen manages to
encapsulate all this into an enthralling and funny

story is a marvellous achievement for this tal ented young man and both a tribute and a credit to the RATS themselves. On stage Owen himself
directed a cast of 22 young people, 16 principals and a hard working and attrac tive junior chorus, Hannah Williams, Megan Hindle, Emily Goossens, Laura Frost, Sammi Collinge and Anna Davies, who doubled and tripled as film set crew, reporters and assorted extras. Invidious it may be to
pick out individuals in an excellent ensemble, but special mention has to be made of Hazel Thompson, playing the studio star and obviously based on Mari lyn Monroe, and of Bry ony Frost, the chorus girl who gets lucky in career and love, and the hand some male lead, Jo Ship- man, whose character was based on Gene Kelly. There was excellent
comedy support from Craig Jackson and Jamie Bain, timing and reactions almost as good as Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis! Ben Jones was an excel

were very good, especially Rebecca Parkinson as bitchy Hollywood colum nist, Penelope Panama, Will Thomas as the “ Columbo lookalike” sleazy reporter and Guy Mason, Rob Hindle, Ceri Davies, Rachel Ruddock, Lizzie Turner and Tam Dibley in their supporting roles.

the hard-bitten older star was a revelation and her rendition of “One more for the road” was greeted with an ovation every night. Criticisms? Well, it was
a touch long, but, helped by a well-stocked bar, no- one seemed to mind that! The sets were perhaps
over elaborate, requiring a lot of hard work between scenes, the free programme was very professional, but a synopsis of scenes would have been helpful.
