Pea chicks make recycling depot a visitor attraction!

CLITHEROE’S recycling depot has been attracting a lot of attention recently thanks to a family of pea cocks. One of the adult pea

cocks that regularly fre quents the Lancashire County Council recycling depot situated at the bot tom of Henthom Road has given birth to five chicks, which have been causing quite a stir with the general public. Local residents, who use the depot, have been visit

ing the site in droves to show the chicks, which are now around six weeks old, to show their children. The depot’s team of

recycling attendants told the Clitheroe Advertiser and Times they could not believe the interest the young chicks had caused - commenting that, it had become a real visitor attraction. Picture shows one of the

Employers Beware! The 1st October 2004 changes life as you know it forever.

Mandatory minimum requirements for statutory dismissal and disciplinary procedures and statutory grievance procedures comes into force on the 1st October 2004 and apply to all employers, whatever the number of employees.

The prescribed steps that you must take are quite clear (telling your employees "you're fired" is not such a step).

If the prescribed steps are not followed to the tetter, then the dismissal will automaticBlIy be unfair no matter what the reason for the dismissal might be.

In addition, the amount of compensation will then be increased by between 10% and 50%, up to the current ceiling of £55.000 on unfair dismissal payments.

Your employees need to be told! You are required to provide employees with a statement of employment particulars under the Employment Rights Act 1996, for the first time a failure to provide a proper written

,

statement may lead to financial penalities.

The current exemption for employers of less than 20 employees has now been removed.

Houldsworths can help you stay on the right side of the law and to help you to prevent problems'* before they occur.

If you need any assistance on the new Employment Law, or advice as to employment generally, then please give either John Houldsworth or . ^ Elton Ashworth a ring. ■

They will be more than happy to help you.

Ill-health forces vicar to resign

by Faiza Afzaal

PARISHIONERS in the villages of Hurst Green. and Mitton have been sorry to bid farewell to their recent- ly-appointed vicar after his unexpected resignation due to ill- health. Church-goers heard the

news following the Rev. David Crosby’s absence as he convalesced after treatment in hospital for heart problems. He was appointed vicar

of both St John’s Church in Hurst Green and All Hallows’ in Mitton earli er this year. This week.the Rev.

Canon David Mewis, Rural Dean of Howland, in the Bradford Diocese, of which Hurst Green and Mitton are a part, paid tribute to Mr Cros- by.

He said: "David start

ed in April and his top priority was to be part of the community and not someone from outside fill ing a post.

“Unfortunately, within

two weeks of starting, he had two major angina attacks and was admitted to Blackpool Royal Infir mary. “From being a fit man,

he suddenly found him self ill and following an operation, he returned to fulfil his duties on August 29th, but decided he could no longer continue and handed his resigna tion in on September 2nd.

“Managing two parish

es is a demanding job. Lots of things are expect ed from a new priest and he found the role extremely difficult. “It was both physically

and mentally draining him, but he continuously worked hard to make it work. “I was very much look

ing forward to working with him and feel I have lost a dear friend more than anything.

We offer a flexible timetable, which allows many people to take a Higher Education Course while working and bringing up children.

“It was hard work, because I ’ve worked part-time and I have children to look after, but my grades are looking good and I ’m confident of passing. I ’ve definitely been surprised”

Heather Critchley, BA (Hons) Applied Social Studies

The courses on offer are well respected by employers and they are perfect for anyone wanting to gain employment or promotion in their current job.

“These QAA results represent the highest standards that can be achieved by a Higher Education Course. They indicate, once again the quality of the Higher Education opportunities on offer at Accrington and Rossendale College

be studying for an Honours Degree! I Steven Grogan - BA (Hons) Applied Social Studies - 1st Class

This time next week YOU could _

I Steve had been out of education for over 20 years but had left school with eight O-Levels. Although I there was a big gap, Steve wasn’t nervous about returning to education and says: “I actually looked (forward to doing it - 1 always wished I'd stopped on at school and never did. I had promised myself I

I would go back at some point. I’m a plasterer by trade and this course meant that I was able to carry I on working and still come to my local college to s t u d y . ”

I

I Steve says: “I’ve always been interested in current I affairs, social studies and psychology so when I

I saw this course advertised in the local paper, I I decided to enrol on it. The tutors are brilliant. It is I very hard work with additional study at home.”

“I never thought i ’d get a First Class Honours - but my tutors had told me, they knew that i could.”

I About the course Steve says: “It not easy to work and study full-time - 1 have a supportive family. The

course is really interesting, I’ve learned lots about current social policy and new ways of thinking - I've learnt to get other people’s point of view and look at things differently. I've become a lot more confident and I’ve learned to question things generally in life. I was offered a job while I was studying for the degree, I didn’t even have the degree at that point. I never thought I’d get a First Class Honours - but my tutors had told me, they knew that I could.”

IVanessa Wilkins - BA (Hons) Health - 1st Class

I Leaving school at the age of 18 Vanessa decided to return to education 12 years later saying “1 (wanted to do something more with my life.”

(While Vanessa says she initially was a little ( apprehensive, she was eased back into education (with a full-time Open College Access course. She ( says; “It was very hard work because you have a ( lot to do but it really paved the way for me to do a I Higher Education Course."

...................................^ “The tutors were fantastic,

very supportive and always available to help whether in or out of course time. It was like being in one big family.”

(After successfully completing the access course, I like many others, Vanessa wanted to continue with her education and decided to study for a Degree in Health. She says; “I had two jobs - one working part-time as 'Care in the Community’ and another in a

I nursing home. I chose this particular course because it had particular health modules I was interested in, it was the best in the area and it meant I could study locally.

I’ve worked every night for the past four years and studied full-time. It’s not been easy but I’ve Just learned to juggle the work through time-management.”

She continues; “The tutors were fantastic, very supportive and always available to help whether in or out of course time. It was like being in one big family. Everyone in the entire group has become real friends. I think that’s why we have done so well!"

Not content with the first-class Honours Degree, Vanessa is continuing to study having enrolled on a Post Graduate Certificate in Education Course.

I Martin Bolland - BA (Hons) Integrated Technologies - 1st Class

I Self employed Auto Engineer, Martin Bolland says he has 'dabbled' in education all through his life I only being out for 5 years and considers himself a life-long learner.

Wile on a course studying Auto CAD Martin found out about the Integrated Technologies Degree - course and goes on to sa y :" The timescale suited me exactly. I used to teach motor vehicle diagnostics and though looking at college publicity, I found but about this course.

I was worried sick about failing because I was A

“I always thought I had the potential to do well and that I was a capable person but I never had anything down on

paper tO prOVe it.

never any good at school with exams. The tutors were brilliant with a nice easy-going nature. They show you the things you need to know and because you have such interaction with people it makes it easy to learn. The tutoring is so well done. I think it all depends on the teachers that are teaching you

and the quality of that teaching that makes all the difference in the world.

I always thought I had the potential to do well and that I was a capable person, but 1 never had anything down on paper to prove it. At the end of the day, I finished the course and now 1 have a First Class Honours Degree - I’ve been so busy, I suppose it’s still sinking in!
