WHAT would it be like to have a blank canvas for a garden, just a patch of land with nothing in it -
T no design, beds or borders? I - Well, to TV presenter Monty
Don, it was pure bliss.
^ Nearly 20 years ago Monty and his wife Sarah were among Britain’s
' ' leading designers of fashion jew ellery. But when the recession hit they lost everything, just managing to scrape together enough money to
A buy a near ruin of a house in the ® Herefordshire countryside.
They still live in the same house
and have a beautiful garden, which is detailed in their new book, “The Jewel Garden.” So, what advice can he give people who have a blank canvas at the back of their house? “Find the sun first of all,” he
says. “Don’t do anything until you know exactly where the sun falls in your garden from sunrise to sunset. That mil take a full 12 months. “Make a place that is private in
the garden when you most want the sunshine. If your idea of heaven is
to have your morning cup of tea, before going to work, sitting in the garden, that should become the focus. “Work out what you want from
the garden. If you’ve got children you are going to need somewhere near the back door where they can play If you don’t want to cut grass, don’t have a lawn. Gardeners cannot spend too
much time getting the soil right, he adds. Whatever work you put into your soil will he repaid,” he says.

rooms, but all too often halls are neglected or cluttered. Yet even the most ordinary entrance can be turned into a hall of dis tinction with just a few changes. Leslie Geddes-Brown, author of “Hall
ways, Corridors & Staircases”, says: “Hall ways are no longer just somewhere to hang your hat. The entrance to our home sets out
what is to come, it is our personal state ment to visitors about what we value. “They should be warm, welcoming and in keeping with what is behind the closed
doors leading off them.” She points out that nowadays every spare
inch of space is vital and so halls can either be a stunning area to walk through with displays of photos or paintings or can be used for a multitude of purposes with the addition of seating, maybe a desk tucked

The majority of the Leather Suites were stacked on trolleys. The water level touched the feet and in some cases the bottom covering. These have been rectified.

: under the stairs, or clever storage areas. ' H FLOORING
} Think flooring before walls as it has a ' dramatic effect, especially in a hallway where the eye is naturally drawn down- I wards and to the key feature - usually the
* stairs. As a guide, using the same flooring for
hall, landings and stairways helps create a
cohesive feel in a home. Hard flooring, such as wood or ceramic
tiles is practical and attractive for hallways. Trendy choices are industrial-style rubber
flooring, or cork tiles. H CARPET Create a subtle contrast between a stair
case and a hallway by using different car peting on each. Choose a striped runner for the stairs, which picks up the colour of the main carpet which should be plain or tex
tured. Brighten neutral carpeting, or even cover
worn patches with colourful rugs. Alterna tively, make a chic statement by hanging a designer rug on the wall B COLOUR Halls are often narrow, and can be dark
which makes colour choice challenging. Neutral shades generally work best for walls, and woodwork looks good either painted lighter or. darker. Take inspiration for colour from a paint- ing, or a collection of plates which can he
^ displayed in the hall. Pick out one or two shades and echo them in wall and wood
work colours. Large period halls can take dramatic
shades like deep red or racing green if you’re feeling bold, but team it with white so that the elegant lines are emphasised. Painting the walls and ceiling one colour
can help reduce the corridor effect of a high ceiling, long and narrow hall.
B STAIRS Staircases are now the Princesses of the
modem home. In period houses, make the most of any original features such as deco rative wooden banisters and hand rails by
, stripping and polishing them. Draw attention to stairs with lighting.
Tiny recessed lights set just above the skirt-
, ing board can be used to illuminate every . other tread.
