mmm Free training with musical ensemble

FREE training for young double bass players is on offer from Settle Orchestral Society. The musical ensemble,

which draws several of its members from the Kibble Valley, is able to offer the tuition thanks to a generous legacy from Jennifer Smith, who played cello and double bass with the orchestra for many years. Vanessa Humphryes, a

qualified double bass player from Nelson and a regular member of the orchestra, will provide the tuition. Settle Orchestral Society

gives regular performances throughout the year, often featuring guest miists, and is always willing to offer places to players of Grade Six s ta n d i or higher, par ticularly string instrumen talists. For more details about

the tuition or the society, telephone its secretary, Enid Pyrah, on 01756 792642. ® Settle Orchestral Soci

ety will perform at Clitheroe Royal Grammar School’s Chatburn Road site on November 20th, at 7-30 p.m.

ORGANISERS of an African drumming session were overwhelmed by the level of interest shown at a recent taster event. “Slap Happy” community drumming group

Sessions ‘drum’ up plenty of enthusiasm The group, which practises at the Station House

whom went on to sign up to the 11-week beginners’ course, which is being run by the group a t the moment. During the taster session, those who attended

learned two different drumming sets, which they went on to play with the more experienced mem bers of the group.

in Whalley on Monday evenings, has already played at Clitheroe Great Days Festival and at Lark in the Park in Clay ton-le-Moors. Members travel from all over the Ribble Valley

and Hyndbum area to attend the group. Mrs Alison Bentley, the group’s secretary,

expressed thanks to the Awards for All poup for providing funding towards the taster session. She added that although the current 11-week

course was fully booked, the group hoped to run similar courses in the New Year. Picture shows from left to right Sean O’Neill,
