TV feasts on the Kibble Valley

by Marcia Morris

TELEVISION viewers enjoyed large helpings of the Ribble Valley

last week. The area featured in three TV

programmes. The first was on Monday evening when a former reporter with the Clitheroe Adver tiser and Times, now a television and sports presenter, Peter Steven son, met the great-niece of James Dawson, a well-known Bashall Eaves farmer, who was murdered in 1934. The regional programme, “Inside Out,” showed Chatburn resident Jennifer Lee Cobban, who is writing a book delving into the unsolved crime of the shooting. Every so often, television docu mentaries raise the subject of “The village that would not talk”. Ghost expert Mr Simon

Entwistle was featured at the top of Clitheroe Castle, on a dark, but moonlit night, describing to a group of ghost hunters the area where the murder took place. The Edisford Bridge Inn was filmed as the place where Mr Dawson had been drinking before making his way home along a quiet country lane to Bashall Hall Farm, where he lived, and the King Street offices of the Clitheroe Advertiser and

Times were also shown, as some newspaper reports of the murder are still retained there. The following night it was

Bashall Eaves again which featured in a television programme called “Daytrippers” which gave a won derful insight into the traditional techniques and production values of making regional beers by Bow- land Brewery owner Richard Baker. The Lancashire brewer was taken on a surprise day trip from Manchester to Prague to sample the different brews made in the beautiful old city in Czechoslo vakia. His enthusiasm and knowl edge of the industry was a joy to watch as he tasted several brews which he said he would try and re create back at his own brewery in Bashall Eaves. The same evening it was Grindle-

ton's turn to show the country what a beautiful place the Ribble Valley is. The first programme in a new series on genealogy entitled “Who Do You Think You Are?” told the story of Bill Oddie, who was tracing his family roots. Because of his troubled life he knew very little about his ancestors, so setting off from his Hampstead home he first went to Birmingham where he lived as a child. The sad

and few memories of his mother’s mental illness were discovered there before he travelled on to Rochdale, where he was actually born, when his branch of the family moved at the start of the Industrial Revolu tion to work in the textile mills. He met his cousin in Rochdale, who looked exactly like him, and by chance had discovered his own fam ily tree and was able to point for mer Goodie star Bill Oddie in the direction of Grindleton where their great, great, great, great-grandfa ther Wilkinson Oddie was bom. Bill Oddie visited the Duke of

York Hotel, in Grindleton, where licensee Mrs Kathryn Williams introduced a surprise which await ed him in the form of 75-year-old Basil Oddie, who, it turned out, is Bill’s cousin five times removed. Basil showed him round the village with the wonderful views of Pendle Hill, at the same time explaining there were hundreds of Oddies in the area. In fact, the house where I live was built and lived in by the Oddie family and I remember butcher Tom Oddie who once had a shop in the village. Bill, who loves the countryside,

was amazed and bewildered that his ancestors had moved from such a wonderful part of the country.

Charity praise for the pupils

PUPILS of a Slaidburn school received a well-deserved pat on the back after raising funds for a worthwhile charity. Brennand's Endowed School donated

more than £200 to MedEquip4Kids after several weeks of fund-raising. The charity, which improves the health

care services for sick or injured children throughout the North West, sent a repre sentative to the school who met with the children and told them about the work the charity carries out. Catherine, from the charity, enjoyed

talking to the pupils and said: “The chil dren have worked very hard for the charity and we are delighted by the support also shown by the school’s headteacher, Mrs Milne-Redhead, and all the staff at the school.” The children were also given educational

games to play at home, which they received sponsorship for once they had been com pleted. Our picture shows the pupils of Bren

nand's Endowed School with Catherine from MedEquip4Kids. (G181004/4).

Schools report lambasted by MP

NIGEL EVANS, Member of Par liament for the Ribble Valley and Fulwood, has lambasted the plans as set out in Mike Tomlinson’s, the former Chief Inspector of Schools, report on secondary schools, saying that it is a fudge'and that the Con servatives will restore faith in the exam process. Mr Evans said: “The Govern

ment is trjdng to bulldoze through solid institutions that we already have and replace them with a diplo

ma confetti, which would be useless to students and industry as a whole. When we return to Govern ment, after the next election, we will reinforce the A-Level system we already have to the gold stan dard of examinations for students throughout the world as it was, is, and should be in the future. “Britain is already the victim of a dumbed down Government and

'they now wish to further roll this out into our education system.

“We have already seen the Gov

ernment’s onslaught against com petitive sports where gold medals are doled out to the fittest and fittest alike. “In New Labour speak, the best

and the worst are judged at the same level, there are no winners and there are no losers. This new diploma system will be given the big thumbs down by pupils and industry who will be confused by the so called modernisation.”
