Garstang Ladies...........0 Clitheroe Ladies . . . . .

.4

CLITHEROE Hockey Club bounced back from last week’s performance to go joint top of the table. The locals were deter

mined and outplayed Garstang for the majority of the game. And they could easily

have doubled their score if it had not been for the heroics of the home goal keeper. Clitheroe deservedly

went ahead midway into the half through Jacqui Ashton. And minutes later,

Rachel Walmsley picked up a loose ball in her own half and set up Pauline Mooreby for the second. In the second half,

Clitheroe put Garstang under more pressure but

could not break through their battling defence until 10 minutes from time. Ashton grabbed her sec

ond, before Mooreby fol lowed with her second and Clitheroe’s fourth. Chtheroe’s player of the

match went to Heidi Wor thington who had a superb game in midfield. This was Clitheroe’s

first win in their new strip, kindly supplied and sponsored b y the Rose and Crown, Chtheroe. Anyone interested in

joining the club should come to training, held between 8-9 p.m. on Wednesday evenings at Chtheroe Cricket Club. Or alternativaly, con

tact Hannah Laverty (07855 337708)

Jaggs is a reeord-breaker!

MARK JAGGS set two new records at Clitheroe Dolphins Annual Swim ming Gala - including one that had lasted for 15 years. Watching over seven-

year-old son Sam, Peter Jones’ 1989 200m Individu al Medley record went, along with the Open 100m breaststroke time. Those were just two of

six new marks set, with 158 personal best times record

ed. Nine-year-old Thomas

Carter achieved a new record in the 50m freestyle, while Kara Singleton (10) took the 50m backstroke accolade. .Elizabeth Highton

shaved half a second off the 10 year old 14/15 yrs 50m breaststroke record, while Rhiannon Whickham took almost two seconds off the six-year-olds 25m freestyle time. The trio of Jane Nolan,

Carol Holden and Kathryn Buggie also received Future Fit Training Certificates from County Swimming Coach Dave Evitts. Also completing the

course but unable to attend the presentation were David Roberts and Susan Carter.

TAG remain top of the Blackburn and District Badminton Association Second Division with victory over

■StanhillB. And their lead was extended after

second-placed Halsteads dropped valuable bonus points against BAE

Systems. Westholme B and Independent A

were locked in a very tight match, and after the completion of the mixed doubles, both sides had taken four games and had scored 97 aces.

With the final result hinging on the

last game of the match - a men’s dou bles - the result could have gone either way. The visitors fielding a partnership

of N. Shuker and C. Hindle defeated C. Fawcett and M. F^orth by a ^ - gle ace, pving the visitors a 9-7 win. Colne are the new leaders of the Third Division as they remained the •only unbeaten side in the lea^e. They recorded a great win over third-placed Whitehall, while Sales-

bury outplayed Independent B with a 10-6 victory. Westholme, fielding John Muller

and daughter Joanne, were defeated in the mixed doubles. But in spite of this setback, the

home side took a 5-3 lead after the completion of the mixed doubles. However, with Sue Whittaker’s two

sons recording comfortable wins, the visitors could only record a victory in one game in the ladies doubles.

A feast of running is served up

Clitheroe RUFC........15 Bagford Vipers..........12 CLITHEROE recorded a narrow victory over rivals Bagford Vipers from the Midlands. The Vipers always

bring a. mix of veterans and youth, and this sea son was no exception. With the pitch rather

unusually dry for this time of year, a feast of running rugby was served up.

The fact that Clitheroe

won three tries to two had more to do with their superior fitness, and the fact that they hadn’t had a night out sampling the local hostelries, unlike the visitors. The Littlemoor outfit

were able to field quite a mixed team themselves. In the pack, it was a

special moment for young tearway flanker Joe New ton, to be joined by his father Dave, making a comeback in his old favourite second row posi tion. Although still competi

tive, it was a bit like the young greyhound showing up a rather plodding carthorse! In the backs, captain

Dave Watson presided over a settled-looking side of familiar faces, although it was good to see a cameo appearance towards the end by substitute Andrew Burrill. Though after his first

tackle, it looked like he wished he hadn’t reversed that retirement idea, the baggy shorts were a nice touch and created a wel come extra splash of

colour. Clitheroe were always

ahead, and scored their first try almost from the kick-off, John Proctor weaving his way through a stationary defence, sell- . ing outrageous dummies along the way, then feed ing fellow prop Ben Graves for the try. A second try just before

half-time, by left winger Edward Finch-Hacking, converted by the young ster Declan O'Duffy, put the home team in full con trol. However, the Vipers

sobered after the break and scored two quickfire tries of their own, but not to be outdone, Clitheroe fought back to run away. Fittingly the skipper

Watson grabbing the glory - diving over from close range. ,He will be pleased with

his team’s performance, but knows there will be little of the frivolities this Saturday, with Colne and Nelson the next visitors to Littlemoor. Clitheroe will be itching

to avenge las t month’s reverse in this North Lancs encounter, with a 2.15 p.m. kick-off. North Ribblesdale . . .27 Clitheroe Cavaliers . . .5 CLITHEROE lost this battle in loose play to a larger North Ribblesdale team, who outmuscled the Littlemoor men. But the second half per

formance gives cause for optimism in the next fix ture away to Ashton. U n f o r t u n a t e l y ,

Clitheroe failed to build on previous good form at

SONIA COOK, landlady of the Rose and Crown in CUtheroe, who has donated the new strip for Clitheroe Hockey Team. (S11204/13)

as Clitheroe edge it rugby

Settle, displaying a lack- W lustre, error-ridden first

half. All too often the superi- ^

or backs and forward power of the home side @ pierced the Clitheroe defence, creating many phases of open running rugby. The Maroon and Golds

display lacked cohesion, conceding four tries to none. A solitary attack from

James McLoon was the only glimmer of hope, having swooped on a loose ball running from deep in his own half into the opposition’s 22 metre line. During much self-

assessment at the inter val, Rowley’s charges came out all guns blazing, concerntrating on ball retention, combined with more aggression and

tenacity. Clitheroe began to drive ^

forward with ball in hand, ^ out rucking North Rib blesdale.

^ Despite this, the home

team grabbed another try ® against the run of play. Further phases of pres

sure and possession from the Clitheroe forwards and backs continued, with Q young, flanker Rich Slinger working overtime. Captain Rowley was

held short on the opposi- ^ tion 5 metre line, but not ^ to be denied, a bullocking charge from the evergreen Bill Thatcher proved too 0 much as he forced his way over the whitewash, although the conversion attempt was sliced wide.

Sixth straight win for in-form Hurst Green

Hurst,Green................5 Kelbrook ....................1 HURST Green are the in form team of the East Lancancashire League First Division, having won their last six games. They were however,

given a sterner test in this one than the final score would suggest. The home side’s defence

never looked in danger of being breached, as they dominated the centre. Mark Young, who has

notched 14 in his last three games, was having one of those days, with a number of near misses. The deadlock was bro

ken when Craig Shaw played an exquisite pass to Alan Coar. He beat two players

before whipping a ball in, which was parried by the Kelbrook keeper into the path of Dan Walker, who

finished with aplomb. The lead was increased

when Mark Young headed a cross into the corner of the net. ■ Kelbrook came back strongly and thought they had scored, only to be denied by a stunning save from the home keeper. But breaking quickly

from defence, Simon Tip- ton showed a clean pair of heals to the visitor’s full back and slid a pass to Dan Walker, who netted comfortably. Kelbrook pulled back a

well-deserved goal through an excellent strike, only for Andy Waite to head home a cor ner to make it 4-1. There was still time for

substitute Colin Piper to get on the scoresheet as he drove home through a crowd of players from the edge of the area.

Buggy ban is baffling golfers!

CONFUSION is rife on local golf courses about new rules affecting buggy and trolley bans, says the Nation al Golf Clubs' Advisory Association. The Disability Discrimination Act means golf clubs

must remove any physical barriers preventing a dis abled person from using a course. Failing to do this ■will make the club liable for dam ages for unlawful discrimination, which could run into

thousands. However, Michael Shaw, National Secretary of the

NGCAA, says many clubs are confused about how the Act affects buggy and trolley bans that already exist: "We've had a surge of queries from clubs concerned about the legality of buggy and trolley bans on their

courses. “There is definitely confusion. What is clear is that

courts no longer approve a blanket bah. "However, clubs are entitled to impose a ban which

restricts access to those parts of the course it is neces sary to preserve. “They must also implement a ban if the health and

safety of any individual is at risk due to weather and ground conditions, "It is vital that dubs are able to justify any ban they

impose and they must have documentation in place to explain the reasons behind it," added Shaw.
