In addi tion to these features, there is the usual Yaris niceties such as front seat belt pretensioners with driver’s side force limiter, a tilt adjustable steering column, electric headlamp levelling and a trip computer.. .

seat, it is obvious this is no ordinary little car. There is no traditional dashboard; in fact you are left wondering where all the instruments are until you turn on the ignition. Then you will notice the central binnacle which houses an Fl-style digital LED displaysomething that is seldom seen on road cars, and certainly never previously seen on an affordable little hatchback like this. It is angled towards the driver for better visibility and shows speed and revs in numbers. Despite the Colpiir-Collec tion moniker, it does help if you Quite like grey,

tech engine making its 1.0-litre capacity seem like something with at least a :1.3-litre unit under the dinky bonnet. Its inherent narrow ness also makes diving for thpse narrow gaps less stressful than is the case in wider cars. Straight-line performance is good up to the 30 or 40 m.p.h. required in towns, although the rest-to-60 time of .14.1 seconds will not appeal to thrill'seekers. The manual five^peed gear box is an excellent item, positive yet light in operation. Fuel consumption,is predictably good, with a combined figure of over 50 m.p.g., and even when driven hard about town 40 m.p.g. is not an unreasonable target.

would expect a 344 b.h.p. compact saloon to be able to do in a straight line. The sprint to 60 m.p.h. takes 5.4 seconds en route to an electronically-limited 155 m.p.h., which makes it a little slower than Mercedes’ astonishing C32 AMG and . BMW’s M3. . That
is.not to say it lacks drama. The engine will rev to a heady 7,200 r.p.m. and the soundtrack alone is worth the price of admission. The engine does its best work between
l;10d and 5,000 r.p.m., where the mon strous torque renders the six-speed manu£
al gearbox almost superfluous. The gearchange is one of Audi’s best efforts; smooth with a decent weight to the change linked to a heavy duty clutch, y e t : at any speed between 20 m.p.h; and 120 m.p.h. it is tempting to just leave the S4 in fourth gear and hitch your surfboard to that huge swell of torque. Lazy? Maybe. Fun? Oh yes.
