Church lunch to say fond farewell

A LUNCH on Sunday will give the Rev. John and Mrs Susan Bir- beck a memorable send-off from the Ribble Valley. ■ They are moving to a challen^g

new parish a t Rawmarsh, near Doncaster.

. . The couple have been in the Val

ley for a decade, Mr Birbeck as Vicar of All Hallows, Mitton, and St John’s, Hurst Green, and Mrs Birbeck as a key worker and in recent years licensed reader at St John’s. The wardens of both

churches have paid tribute in the joint magazine to the couple and their immense influence for good. They mention Mr Birbeck’s spir

ituality, sense of humour, kindness and thoughtful ministry and his wife’s devotion to the church and gentle yet challenging sermons. Major improvements have been

carried out at the historic All Hal lows, and Mr Birbeck has got his hands dirty himself in various pro jects as well as used his financial expertise as a former banker to help raise funds. The couple themselves give a

spiritual message of thanks for love and support received, and make a practical point too. They write: “You have taught us

much about living together and in this way prepared us for what lies ahead. We leave with no regrets about unfinished business for we know that you are more than equal to anything th a t is needed. You may wish to take up the Shirebum Chapel project at All Hallows once again and, perhaps, sort out better car parking for St John’s.” Sunday’s Jacob’s Join event is

at Stonyhurst College and is a joint one for both churches.

Former PC aims to improve lives

A FORMER police officer is trying to ensure that ail Ribble Valley residents, from young to old, enjoy the best quality of life possible. Newly-appointed quality of life officer Mr

John Barber is looking forward to his role, which is being funded through the Ribble Val ley’s Crime and Disorder Partnership. As well as acting as a mediator, Mr Barber,

who had 30 years’ service with the police force, 24 as a rural beat bobby, will also be providing a central contact point for the various agencies which deal with issues relating to anti-social behaviour. “My role is not easily defined,” said Mr Bar

I am look ing to make sure that all the work is being co ordinated so that maximum effort is made without duplication.” He will be working closely with youth ser

vices both at Lancashire County Council and the Trinity Partnership to try to improve facil ities for young members of the community. However, if all efforts to prevent misbehav

iour fail, anti-social behaviour orders will be imposed and youngsters left to feel the “full force of the law on their shoulders”. Said Mr Barber: “Anti-social behaviour

.i

orders are a strong measure to make sure young people who are behaving anti-socially comply with the rules and regulations, but before that stage is reached we will be looking to engage young people on behaviour con tracts. They would have to agree to behave in an agreed manner giving the people who suffer at the hands of the anti-social behaviour some relief.” Over the next two years, Mr Barber’s goal is

to make young people aware of their responsi bilities and encourage greater tolerance on both sides. “I want to try and give an under standing of how a good citizen of the Ribble Valley should behave,” he said. Mr Barber has already made contact with

all the local parishes and every borough coun cillor and says he is open to dialogue with them in order to examine and assess any problems they may be aware of. He is also keen to talk to victims of anti

social behaviour, as well as the perpetrators: “There are two sides to every story and I want to try to listen to both sides. Anti-social behav iour is my target and I am looking to reduce it in the Ribble Valley by working with all the agencies.” Anyone wishing to contact Mr Barber can ring him on 01200 414462.

Walk is marred by a

continuous downpour IT was nearly a disaster for 20 members of Clitheroe Ramblers’ Association when they set out from the splendid new car park in Rath-

mell village for their walk. They were greeted by a heavy shower which

\ k

developed into a longer period of rain as they began to walk, in good heart, to the summit of Whelpstone Crag. Leader Mrs Pat Parrott decided to alter the

planned route, and keep to the minor roads as far as the remote outpost of Whelpstone Lodge. The fields were awash, streams running high and the mist engulfing them as they left the road and, trusting to the compass, wan dered over the rough moors to locate a gap in the wall which led unerringly to the trig point. Too wet to linger long, the group stood for a few moments imagining the view, then pru dently retraced their route back to the lodge. From here the farm track was followed to

Owlshaw, the most remote farm in the area, where, clear of mist, but still in the rain, strug gling on slippy stiles, hampered by their water proofs, the party sought shelter in a ruined barn for a much-delayed lunch. Apart from a brief spell of dry weather, they continued in rain along the track to Upper Sheepwash where they had been promised a walk over one of the narrowest stone footbridges in York shire. Not this time, however! Impossible to reach across a flooded beck, they were forced back to the track to view it from the other end. Shortly after this, the minor road was

reached, and again, with the agreement of the party, the leader opted in favour of keeping to the road, knowing that many of the stiles, dif ficult at the best of times, would be very haz ardous in'the rain. Below the mist, the views were good, with Pen-y-Ghent and Fountain Fell seemingly in sunshine. , In surprisingly good spirits the ramblers

made an early return to Rathmell, leaving the leader with a ready-made walk for use on some brighter and drier day. . , The next walk will be on Sunday, to Gar- grave. Inquiries, tel. 07977 217337.

CHILDREN a t a Ribble Valley school have been introduced to Indian culture and danca The pupils of St Leonard’s CE School, Langho,

watched Vinata Godbole perform a dance which used steps, movements and music to illustrate a short story of Indian origin. The storytelling also involved her explaining the movements to the childreii euid showing them the artefacts she used in the danca' The performance was organised by Lancaster Inter

national Concert Group and was aimed at the Infants, Key Stage 1 children. Part of the National Curriculum requirement is the

inclusion of music from other cultures and the perfor mance followed a visit to the school by a musician who demonstrated a variety of instruments, including examples from Australia, Africa and India. Deputy head Miss Patricia.Dunn said th a t the

school was trying to give the children a taste of music from round the world and at assembly music from dif ferent countries was used. (C200103/1)
