A TWO-DAY feast of sport for chil dren attracted 1,200 young foot
ballers to Clitheroe at the weekend. There were 64 teams competing each day in the huge event organised by local
club Clitheroe Wolves a t the Roefield Leisure Centre. A squad of 32 referees was kept busy
over both days as the youngsters from the Kibble Valley, Blackburn, Burnley, Nel son, Colne, Accrington, York and even from as far as Peterborough took part in the keenly-contested seven-a-side games. Kibble Valley Mayor Coun Alan Year-
ing kicked off the first game on Saturday morning.
There were competitions for boys aged
from seven to under-14 and girls from 12 to 14.
Clitheroe Wolves secretary Mrs Anne
Barker said it had been a very successful and enjoyable tournament. The only problem had been with car
parking in the area during the weekend. She said the club apologised to local res
idents of Edisford and Low Moor who may have been inconvenienced, adding:“The problem was caused by Rib- ble Valley Borough Council which accept ed full responsibility for car parking. We wanted cones put along the road to pre vent people from parking on the road. “Ribble Valley sent two car park atten
dants.” She said there had also been problems
with tickets being issued to people parking on the grass at Roefield. Mrs Barker added th a t Clitheroe
Wolves did not receive a penny from any parking charges. But she vowed that the club would make sure next year they would handle their own parking arrange ments for the convenience of competitors’ parents and local residents.
