Priority list for facelifts planned
by Tim Procter
A L IS T of regeneration work priorities has been drawn up by Ribble V a l le y Borough Council. Several of them involve working more closely with
other public and semi-public bodies. The various efforts reflect both local wishes and Government instructions. They are based on commercial and business expan
sion - which includes the tourist industry. A feature of this includes the possibility of a feasabil-
ity study about better use of the Gisburn Forest and Stocks Reservoir area. Lancashire County County Council is also involved in the idea. Funding for various purposes has consistently been
obtained for the borough, although neighbouring ones with bigger problems find this easier. But Ribble Val ley’s officials and councillors will continue to seek as big a share as possible. Other priorities include:- • Helping local business organisations develop exist
ing firms and encourage new ones. • Working with the East Lancashire Partnership to
promote the borough as a location for investment. ® Helping the development of workspace opportuni
ties. • Investigating gaps in the currently available busi
ness support and grant assistance schemes. • Assisting the action plan developed by Clitheroe
the Future, including the market town enhancement scheme.

a display by Darwen Morris Dancers. Clitheroe Town Band also entertained. Among the other attractions
was a competition for decorated bicycles and scooters.
One of the organisers, Mr Brian
Williams, said: "The event made a considerable profit for church funds, although that is not the prime reason for holding it. “The main idea is to give the community a nice day out and the
Survey shows good relations with trust staff
.“NOTABLE” achievements in relations with staff are shown by a survey, says Calderstones NHS Trust.
; Surveys are carried out by other similar trusts and the local one shows more satisfac tion levels above the average than below it. ; I t demonstrates year on year improve ments, a meeting of the trust board was told. Some 370 staff, 26.4% of the total, chose to
take part in the survey. It showed the management that areas for
development included career progression opp- portuninites, communications to and from the .trust, consultation with staff, pay and the sense of feeling valued by the trust. But responses from the staff indicated a
high level of satisfaction with the identifica tion of training and development needs, the time made available to staff for training, active policies for dealing with caring respon sibilities, support from managers in address ing carer needs, communication between staff and immediate managers, effective working relationships between staff and immediate managers, support by immediate managers 'and proactive steps to prevent harassment and bullying. The trust board has now nominated Direc
tor of Corporate Strategy Mr Graham Jowett as the person responsible for implementing effective communication with all employees. 1 The board says that it “ undertakes to ensure that all employees are kept regularly informed about the objectives, performance and progress of the trust and acknowledges •that to achieve this a systematic approach is needed to ensure effective communication with all employees.”

regeneration programme have already been broken. More than double the 25 business start-ups aimed for have been supported, 14 rural workspace projects have been developed against a target of eight and seven rural diversification projects have been encouraged, three more than hoped for. The area’s Business and Commercial Directory has
been updated and is free to inquirers. It lists more than 600 businesses in the borough and is compiled with a view not only to encouraging new businesses but to helping existing ones trade with each other.
