Police want to know more about patients

on the issue - and the Trust board has

decided that some information can be given, but only in special circumstances. Police joined the search after a patient ran

into fields some distance from the hospital complex last year. He was soon caught - but officers felt their

response could have been better-informed had they known more about the man and why the hospital did not want him at large. Nearby residents, too, have been concerned

about the past records of people living in the hospital and the air of secrecy surrounding them.

Calderstones NHS Trust has consistently

emphasised that it needs only to offer medium secure conditions for those in its care. Patients who leave the premises are not said to have escaped but to be absent without authority. The Trust has accepted some patients have

criminal records but points out many others have not. I t says that, as would be expected in a med

THE police want Calderstones NHS Trust to reveal to them more details about people in its care. They have made a formal written request

ical setting, patient records are private and confidential. Legal advice has confirmed its stance that

blanket release of information would not be lawful, due to strict rules on confidentiality. But board members and staff are keen to

work with the police as closely as possible. This includes sharing information, in confi dence, about patients on an individual basis. An example of this would be where an individ ual had left the hospital, or the supporting of an escorting nurse, and there were concerns about this absence without leave. The trust indicates that it already does this. Since last year’s unauthorised absence, secu

rity has been tightened, with improved inter nal procedures, better fencing and a gate house. Chief Executive Mr Russ Pearce has reiter

ated the Calderstones NHS Trust’s commit ment not only to the health and welfare of patients but also to the safety and protection of the public. He pledged: “The Trust will not hesitate to share with Lancashire Constabulary such

information as is necessary to ensure that their ends are met.”
