quick question. How many cars can you buy that feature a drop top and all wheel drive?
Well done if you picked the Audi T T and
the Porsche 911 Carrera4 Convertible. Even more kudos if you knew about some forthcom ing lovelies from Lamborghini. But if you nar rowed the brief to encompass rear seats, only one manufacturer can help you out. The Audi A4 Cabriolet is becoming a familiar sight on Britain’s roads but all of the early cars directed drive to the front wheels only. The Ingolstadt company have made us wait for the legendary quattro transmission, but now that it is here we need the weather to test it. The Audi A4 Cabriolet quattro offers the
wet weather security of all-wheel drive cou pled with the ability to turn itself into one of the most elegant sun loungers around. Two versions are offered, powered by either
a 163 b.h.p. 1.8-litre turbo-charged four-cylin der engine or Audi’s magnificent 3.0-litre V6 power plant that is good for no fewer than 226 b.h.p. Although quattro has become a power ful brand builder for Audi, it is important to realise that not all quattro systems are alike. The T T and A3 uses a system that is based on A Haldex differential, directing drive to the front wheels most of the time. A4 models, on the other hand, use a more rugged Torsen dif ferential that is the true successor to the sys tem used by the car that started it all, the Audi Quattro proper. This gizmo senses the amount of torque that each wheel can sensibly deploy and offers a more natural feel than the Haldex system for experienced drivers. For those without such subtlety, it will mean the end of wheelspin in the wet and a welcome absence of torque steer -
that tedious tugging
at the steering wheel - under hard accelera tion.

Acceleration is certainly on the agenda with
both the A4 Cabriolet quattro models. Even the 1.8T model is agreeably quick and the 3.0- litre V6 is good for over 150 m.p.h., knocking off the sprint to 60 m.p.h. in less than eight seconds.
Although prices have yet to be finalised, the
surprisingly aggressive pricing of its two wheel drive siblings bodes well. Although it is an accomplished ground cov-

taken Munich’s best efforts as covetable own ership propositions. German coachbuilder Karmann (which also
builds the Mercedes CLK Cabriolet) has worked with Audi to create a true four-seater. Mind you, do not go carrying too much bag gage: although the boot capacity is 26 litres up on the old car, that still only means 246 litres with the roof down (or 315 litres with the top up): enough space for two golf bags in real terms.

which hides beneath an aluminium-trimmed solid tonneau cover when not in use. Electri cally operated of course, it opens or closes in 24 seconds and there are no fiddly manual latches to break your nails on before you can press the button. The whole thing can also be done from the
outside of the car by using the remote control keyfob. Unfortunately, the wind deflector (essential if you want to comfortably drive with the roof down at speed) costs extra and, to add insult to injury, it effectively reduces your car to a two-seater. I f you need a cabriolet that seats five and
features all-wheel drive, there is only one place to go.
