A,NEW free ball court facility has opened in the grounds of Clitheroe Cas tle. The £38,000 project replaces an all- weather pitch which, when it opened, was also a partnership between the

council and the Rotary Club of Clitheroe. Declaring the facility open, Ribble Valley Mayor Coun. Alan Yearing wel

comed everyone present and made par ticular mention of the eight young peo ple who were representing local schools. The facility had, he said, the wonder

ful backdrop of the Castle and the adja cent bowling green cafe. He thanked the partnership, Ribble Valley Borough Council, Lancashire County Council and Clitheroe the Future. The sum of

£20,000 had been donated to the pro ject via Clitheroe the Future and the county council, with the borough coun cil funding the remainder. The former paid-for all-weather pitch

facilities have been moved to Edisford. Through the Market Towns Initiative, it was felt that opportunities for recre ation for young people in Clitheroe were

lacking. The borough council was able to earmark the site for the ball court and provide the technical support. Pictured are officials representing the

partnership and young people from Clitheroe schools at the opening, with Coun. Yearing and St James' CE School pupil Connor Haworth (10). (T170603/9)

Be safe when out and about on your bicycle . .

WITH the school holidays fast approaching, pop stars S Club 8 have given their support to the THINKI road safety cam paign and are encouraging young cyclists in the North West to take extra care. The band’s safety message coincides with a new advertis ing campaign under the TH IN K ! road safety banner. Aimed at 12-15 year olds, the new ads show the importance of wearing a cycle helmet and how helmets can help protect cyclists in the event of an acci

dent. The ads are appearing in teen magazines and are sup ported by a new cycle safety website, www.cyclesense.net. Recent figures show that 439

cyclists aged 11-16 were killed or injured on the.roads in the North West in 2001 alone. Nationally these cyclists are more likely to be killed or involved in an accident during the summer months of May to August when 360 were killed or seriously injured in 2001. Band member Calvin says: “Cycling is a great way to get

about - it keeps you fit and it’s good fun. I spend a lot of time street skating and I always make sure I have the right safe ty gear.”

The T H IN K ! campaign

advises young cyclists to: © Make sure your bike is the

right size for you; • Find out where cycle train

ing courses are available in your area and enrol on one; ® Make sure you know your

highway code; © Know where special cycle routes, paths and lanes are pro

vided in your area so that you can spend less time on busy roads; • Make sure you wear a

cycle helmet every time you ride your bike, even on short journeys close to home; © Make yourself easily visi

ble to other road users - wear fluorescent clothing during the day and reflective clothing at night; • Stay aware when you are on your bike - don’t wear a per

sonal stereo or use a mobile phone;

A N EW Clitheroe sports camp set up to offer childcare solu tions for NIIS staff has been voted a huge hit. King’s Sports

Camps opened a facil ity for the first time at Clitheroe Royal Grammar School. Childcare co-ordi- nator Amanda

Clough commented: “ The camp was

extremely successful and lots of our staff throughout

the

Trusts found it easy enough to leave their child with King’s, safe in the knowledge that they would be looked after. The general feel ing from the children who went along was that the camps were a great opportunity to try out a range of sporting activities, while making some really good friends.” (I t has long been

recognised that one of the problems the NHS faces is to pro vide adequate child care solutions to its staff, especially throughout school holidays, which is why this camp is one of a number throughout the UK, that KSC are providing. Activity schemes such as this are part of the nation- al’childcare strategy for the NHS. The strategy focuses on providing good quali ty, accessible and affordable childcare.

Children at the

camp were able to participate in the usual range of sport ing activities from aerobics, football, tag rugby, hockey and tennis, in addition to some more unusual ones such as Danish longball, ultimate and T-ball. In addi tion the camp, which catered for children aged from four to 17, offered a range of cre ative activities, such as drawing and drama. Following the suc cess of the Clitheroe

camp, it will be repeated for up to four weeks from July 28th to August 22nd. Plans are also in progress for a new NHS camp in the Pendle area. The King’s Trust

has been in operation since 1991. As a chari table trust, all funds go to worthwhile pro jects such as support ing children in com munities with HIV/AIDS in Africa. Pictured are some

of the children who enjoyed the Clitheroe camp, (s)
