to get new landmark

THE Ribble Valley is all

set to have a prestigious new landmark. Kemple End has been

selected as one of six loca tions to host "landscape transforming" landmarks. Fashion designer Wayne

Hemingway is to help select the winning designs in the £600,000 Panopti cons competition. Architects and artists are

being invited to design fea tures, such as beacons, shel ters or viewing platforms at the sites. The com p e t it io n has

been organised by th e Royal Institute of British Architects, and it is hoped th a t two designs a y e ar

could be constructed over the next three years. The first sculptures will

Auction mart shares sale

SHARES in Clitheroe Auc tion M a r t were sold for £6.20p each in a special sale on Friday. The mart briefly took on

a Stock Exchange a ir as farmers vied for the 700 shares which came under the hammer. “ I t is very h e ar tening

that our customers showed such confidence in the mar ket,” said managing direc tor Mr Robert Parker. The price was a record -

even allowing for inflation, it is a considerable rise on the £1 value a t the time the mart moved to the new complex from Clitheroe. A good outlook is expect

ed from to d a y ’s annual meeting of the company.

Livestock business appears tp be making: a good recov e ry from th e foot and

mouth'disease trauma and the Silverwoods sale divi sion is doing well. A final dividend of 2p is

being recommended, mak ing a to ta l of 6p for th e year.

Climbing wall A SABDEN man is hop ing to go up the wall. Mr R o b e r t Sutcliffe, of 1 Clitheroe Road, wants to change th e use of the building from a disused light engineering workshop into an exercise room fea turing an artificial climb ing wall. Comments on the appli

cation (No. 0379) must be submitted to Ribble Valley Borough Council by tomorrow.

LANS are in the pipeline Members of th e town

council have asked for the already designed Millenni um sign to be replaced, and work is now under way to find a c o n tra c to r who would be able to turn the request into a reality.

Marvellous medieval market was a real rip-roaring success

by John Turner

THE clouds parted, people turned up in droves and Clitheroe’s Medieval

Market was a rip-roaring success. Visitors came from a wide area - a t one

time there were 11 coaches parked in the town - and a large variety of market and craft stalls and some of the town shops

which opened on Sunday did brisk busi ness. All 34 stalls were taken, most of the cab

ins were open for business and, said organis er Mr Ray Barker, many traders have also booked places for the other monthly theme fairs this summer and the big Christmas event.

Entertainment, which went on all day,

included fire-eating, juggling, a balloon ty in g d em o n s tra tio n and a conce r t by Clitheroe Town Band. “Despite it pouring down with rain when

I was out a t 5 a.m. putting up the signs, it was a br illian t day in the end,” said Mr Barker, proprietor of Castle Miniatures, and one of three organisers of the fair. “The town itself was busy with people. I t

was a pleasure to see it. I t was a tremendous day—a good, free day for families.” The wind and threat of rain slightly cur

tailed the planned programme of entertain ment. Safety considerations ruled out the swing-boats because of th e wind and a group from Southport, due to play lutes, pulled out because of the threat of rain dam age to their valuable instruments. Mr Barker was critical, though, of sup

port from many shopkeepers in the town who remained closed and also the Clitheroe the Future organisation which, he said, had not replied to an invitation to have a free stall to put over its message. He said: “Sadly, the feedback from local

people was the same as before, although the Chamber of T rad e had been asked to request th eir members to open, none of them did. I t was the usual shops, plus Come in Handy, which opened, and people were left once again to go elsewhere once they had enjoyed the show. “Many of th e shoppers were f ran k ly

amazed that Clitheroe was virtually shut,” he added.

THIS year’s Bowland High School prom was almost a case of “a f te r th e Lord Mayor’s show” when it came to modes of travel. Las t year a helicopter joined the stretch

limos and glittering Rolls-Royces used to take revellers to the Moorcock Inn, Waddington. This year there was no helicopter, but plenty

of limos and Rolls-Royces - and a'splash made by two pupils who arrived by tractorl Adam Thomber, holder of an appropriate licence, drove the machine with schoolmate

^ f a rk Graham, of Chatbum. The boys created quite a stir when they arived a t the Moorcock, resplendent in kilts, on the tractor. Ma rk was elected prom king and Sam

- Rachel Latham, Donna Goucher and Glenys Latham at Sunday’s event (T190503/10c)

for opening for the day and Radio Lan cashire for all-day coverage, Mr Barker said: “Unless the Chamber of Trade s ta r t to lis ten to the public on the question of opening on Sundays, Clitheroe will continue to lose trade to other towns. “The public in Clitheroe deserve a better

deal than the one they are being given, and as loyal as they are a t present, unless we wake up our ideas, Clitheroe will die of neglect.”

The next event, on June 15th, will be on

th e theme of witches and wizards, and among the attractions will be a display of owls. Later in the summer, one of the fairs will include a clog-dancing competition.

• Mr Richard Jackson, spokesman for

Clitheroe the Future, said he was not aware they had been offered the free use of a stall. “I am not sure what we would have gained by having a stall a t the medieval market,” he added. Clitheroe Chamber of Trade’s Mrs Jean

Jackson said th e Chamber had notified every shop in the town about the plans for the Sunday medieval market. “Mr Barker wants to open on Sundays, so

he thinks everyone else should open on Sun days. We open on Wednesdays and we are very busy. He closes on Wednesdays. I t is up to every shop to do what they want to do,” she added

to install a new Clitheroe town sign on Primrose Bridge.

P I™" SgL More money t0 Prevent flooding of local homes Mr Gary Dixon, United Utilities’

CASH is coming to the Ribble Val ley to help homes flooded by sewers during heavy rainfall. The area is to receive a £700,000

share of the £52 million which will be spent across the North-West by United Utilities. Two years ago th e company

announced it would be spending £33 million to tackle sewer flooding, but now wa ter reg u la to r Ofwat has

agreed that a further £18 million can be spent on anti-flooding measures. More than 1,000 homes and busi

nesses, from Cumbria to Shropshire, will be targeted through the build ing of extra capacity sewers, adding pumping s ta tio n s or sep a ra tin g ra inw a te r flows from those of sewage. In Lancashire the money will be used to improve the sewer network in 12 boroughs.

customer services director, said: “For our customers who have had more than one unpleasant experi ence of sewer flooding in their home, this investment is good news. We recognise how horrible sewer flood ing can be and how important it is to our customers that we tackle it - something we remain committed to addressing on their behalf.”

parking problems during a Lan cashire Police Authority “have your say” meeting in Clitheroe. Insp. Bob Ford explained that

local authorities would take over parking enforcement in the coun ty next year, as had already hap pened in other places. Traffic wardens, including

Clitheroe’s, were already being redeployed to office or other work and so the police were issu ing tickets. The new community support officers were not involved in this work, empha sised the inspector.
