ship sports model should have been the planned but now forgotten F-Typo, with the XKR continuing its role as a Grand Touring coupe par excellence. When the F-Type pro gramme bit the bullet however, attention was
of offering more pulling power at low speeds and higher power when the throttle pedal is acquainted with the carpet. Internal exhaust
torque, the XKR has been fitted with stronger pistons featuring sophisticated oil jet cooling. Power is transmitted to the road via a six- speed automatic gearbox first seen on the S- TYPE R performance saloon. This is a thor oughly modern gearbox with intelligent fea tures such as the ability to hold a ratio throughout a corner. This prevents that unset tling moment suffered by automatic cars of yore when you would be powering through a corner only for the gearbox to lurch upwards onto the next cog, leaving you with armfuls of impotent understeer to contend with. No such drama with the XKR. This serves up drama of an altogether different sort.

ble to frighten yourself travelling in a dead straight line, such is its savage turn of speed.
The clubby interior and graceful good looks seduce you into the notion that despite the big on-paper power output, the XKR is some thing of a syrupy GT car. Accelerate hard and that impression vanishes in less than the 5.2 seconds it takes for the XKR to hit 60 m.p.h. The supercharger whinnies like the seven milk floats of the apocalypse and it feels as if some body has switched the scenery to fast forward. I t is the sheer unexpected savagery of the acceleration tha t shocks. One can almost empathise with the guy enshrined in urban myth who strapped a JATO rocket to the top of his car and launched himself into a cliff face. Punch the throttle in an XKR and there is that same feeling of starting something that was a more serious undertaking than you at first expected. Few would finger the exterior styling of the
XKR as in any way dated but Jaguar has been unable to resist a few nips and tweaks, adding Xenon clear lens headlamps and speci fying a revised range of paint schemes, differ ent badging and a smart new choice of alloy wheels. It is underneath that flawless skin that the major beneficiaries of Browns Lane’s blown overtime budget can best be appreciat ed.

XKR does not look too different to the old 370 b.h.p. 4.0-litre unit. Closer inspection reveals that just about everything has been fettled, replaced, revised or resourced while still retaining the look of something you would find at the pointy end of a Spitfire rather than a car. It has been teased out to 4.2-Iitres with a corresponding rise in power to a heady 400 b.h.p. Jaguar has spent considerable time beef ing up the rigidity of the engine to reduce transmitted noise, but such is the volume of the supercharger it is puzzling to consider why. The 100 b.h.p. 2.0-litre and 125
b.h.p. 2.2-litre turbo-diesels are tried and tested power plants, as is the 211 b.h.p. 3.2-litre V6 petrol unit. Of more interest is a 2.2-litre direct injection petrol engine - Vauxhall’s very first - which cranks out 155 b.h.p. and promises real world fuel savings and hefty torque. The other option if you want an even punchier petrol engine is not

prehensively redesigned chassis with new Michelin Pilot Sport tyros. Priced at £26,995, this Clio will rattle off
the sprint to 60 m.p.h. in 5.6 seconds and top out at 152 m.p.h. - figures that will
leave a humble Clio Cup puffing in its wake. With 25 b.h.p. more to call upon com
pared to its predecessor, the Clio V6 255 offers a good deal more in terms of mid range power, all marshalled by a six-speed gearbox. Hierarchy restored, then? This Clio will need to do more than just
drop the hammer in a straight lino if it is to be remembered as a decent hot hatchback. After all, cars like the Alfa 147 GTA, the Volkswagen Golf R32 and the Ford RS Focus are not far off in terms of outright pace and none of these has a proclivity to
disappear backwards through hedges. Renault has worked hard on improving the handling of the Clio V6 255, increasing the wheelbase by 23mm to help stability, widening the track at the front by 33mm and stiffening and revising the front sus pension.
The end result is that the car is now far
more likely to lapse into a progressive four- wheel drift as you probe the edges of the handling envelope rather than snap into irretrievable oversteer. Although it is a vastly more competent
car than its first iteration, the Clio Renaultsport V6 255 is certainly not to be trifled with. On unfamiliar, wet roads you would be
quicker in a Peugeot 106 GTi, but on its day, with that glorious engine barking over your left shoulder, this cantankerous Clio is up there with the greats.
quite so sophisticated but never theless may well prove the most popular choice, a 2.0-litre turbo “four”, good for 175 b.h.p. and seen in the Saab 9-3 line up. Also bor rowed from Saab - and Renault - is the 177 b.h.p. 3.0-litre TDI V6 diesel which marks the top of the Signum tree. The Signum is an interesting proposition and it deserves to do well but it may just be the answer to a question too few have thought to ask.
