Photographers focus on stunning pictures from London Salon

ONE source of learning about how the best photog raphers work is through exhibitions. The London Salon puts

on an outstanding collec tion of pictures in the Cot ton Centre, London, for two weeks every July. The salon is an invited group of outstanding workers, but its exhibition may be entered by others.

Ribblesdale Camera

Club’s evening consisted of slide copies of the prints from the 2002 exhibition, with an excellent commen ta ry by salon member Leigh Preston, who visited the Ribblesdale Club about three years ago. His remarks were clear

gle out particular entries among such a super collec tion of pictorial and cre ative photography, but “Devil’s Eyes” by Dung- Leung Lin, of China, was a vivid and expertly com

and perceptive, leading the listener to see what the photographer was trying to express. Always clear and often humorous, the com mentary was a model of its kind. It would be hard to sin

posed computer picture in the contemporary style of Chinese painting. In con trast, “Preparing for the Gallop” by Ann Cook was a delightful study of young tots at a dancing school. “Road to Dent” by Bob

Elliot was a superbly gritty black and white picture. The reverse of this approach was “Roses” by Colin New, who exhibited a soft focus, high-key study consisting of the palest grey and white tones. Another technical tour-

de-force was a portrait in the style of Renoir, created by soft focus and hand colouring by Carol Tip ping. Highly thought-provok

ing pictures of families in Southern USA, Africa and India were well-represent ed. As usual, the eastern European exhibits were dramatic and often dis turbing.

Celebrations at a village school after outstanding Ofsted report

by Margaret Parsons

ONE of the area’s newest - and smallest - primary schools has received an out standing Ofsted report. Staff and. pupils at St

Mary’s RC School, Sabden, are celebrating after Ofsted inspectors said it is a very good school with good teach ing and provides a caring atmosphere in which the chil dren feel valued. The report lists six major areas

in which the school does well, with only two minor ones that could be improved. St Mary’s has won two presti

gious awards, one for its achieve ments in the 2001 tests and the other for effective teaching of liter acy and numeracy. Three inspectors visited the 48-

pupil school in March and April and their report says it has shown a major improvement since its last inspection five years ago, largely due to the move to brand new premises in 2000 which has enabled staff to develop the curriculum and improve teaching and learning. The inspectors’ report says:

"This is a very good school, which has forged extremely strong links with parents, its parish and the local community. It creates a very caring, family atmosphere in which children feel valued and, in turn, learn to respect and value others. The teaching is good and, as a result, pupils develop very positive attitudes to learning and achieve well. “The school is led and managed

very effectively by the headteacher. Together with staff and governors, she works with great commitment and purpose to provide a high stan dard of education and care for the pupils.”

The report added th a t some

areas of provision for reception pupils could be improved, but this is already under way with a new verandah area almost completed, and some pupils’ handwriting and presentation of work is not as good as it could be. Headteacher Mrs Tina Bradley,

lined will form the basis of the gov ernors’ action plan. The report goes on to say that

most pupils achieve well and some times very well, over their time in

described in the report as described as “very dedicated and showing very good leadership”, said she was delighted with the report and the great strides made since the previ ous inspection - which had put most of the criticism down to the state of the old building. The new school, in a picturesque spot on the fringe of the village, was described as a high quality environment for teaching and learning. The areas for improvement out

school, in relation to their previous attainment. They achieve well in English and mathematics, do par ticularly well in reading, and progress in writing and spelling is accelerating because of the empha sis the school has placed on these areas. St Mary’s also provides very

good support, care and teaching for its children with special education al needs. Pupils’ attitude to school is very

good, attendance is well above average and teaching is good throughout the school, with rela tionships between teachers and pupils being very strong. Teachers work hard at providing

interesting, practical activities for pupils in all subjects and parents are very happy with their chil dren’s progress at St Mary’s. . Our picture shows Mrs Bradley

reviewed a version of the old tale of the Pied Piper of Hamelin and wrote: “There were so many rats in Hamelin that the people didn’t know what to do. The Mayor was in trouble too, because if he didn’t get rid of the rats, he would be sacked.” She colourfully described

reneged on the agreement and paid only 50 guilders, so the Piper charmed away the town’s children with a tune and hid them in a cav ern. She concluded: “The

people of Hamelin threw the Mayor in the river, so the Piper came out with

Oakhill pupils decorated bush to mark May Day

AN old Irish tradition was followed by pupils of Oakhill College, Whatley, to celebrate the May Day festival. They decorated bushes

with ribbons, a tradition thought to be useful in warding off evil and bring ing good luck. Nowadays May bushes

are associated with honour- ing the Blessed Virgin Mary, and as pale blue is the colour associated with her Gill Kelsey and fellow

pupils at Oakhill tied pale blue ribbons on the branch es of their very own “Mary Tree”. A further part of the tra dition at the school on May

Day involves the children bringing in flowers to lay at the feet of a statue of the Virgin Mary. This was followed by a

short service, with children from the preparatory department offering their praise through song and prayer.
