Clitheroe Advertiser & Times, October 9th, 2003 33'

su c c e s s\ THE mood was upbeat at Clitheroe Tennis Club’s presentation evening last Friday. Individual trophies were

’. Junior Open League and Senior Open Third Divi sion cups. ’

. The juniors made it two out of two, having entered the league for the first time last year. Team manager Tony

Bush commented that, while the British Davis Cup tennis team relies on the form and fitness of just two players, he has a squad of 12 players to choose from, all of whom have played at least twice

presented to the club’s competition winners, but the centre piece of the evening was the parading of the East Lancashire

for the team this year, and most of whom will be.eligi- ble next season. Vi...:, . There was an even larg

er number of seniors who represented the club in the victorious open team. Having gained promo

tion at the first attempt, captain Stephen Pym will

sition week in week out but crucially managed to win a significant number of the matches that could have gone either way to lift them to their cred itable final standing in the league. Coach Iain Taylor was

singled out for special praise for his contributions throughout the summer come rain or shine, as club chairman Mary Brass looked back on last season with pride before looking forward to next year with an even greater sense of optimism.

PRIZE WINNERS: Clitheroe Pool League presentation night at the Rose and Crown. B021003/7 Dominant Buck crowned champs

BUCK A were crowned at the Clitheroe Summer Pool League pre sentation. After winning the league and cup

double, and the Chris Stewart Foun dation Trophy, Buck cleared the table. And with Buck Ladiesrwinning

their league, plus the B side ejaiming the Second Division title, it Wascele- brations all round.

' Buck’s Lindsey Lloyd and Sue

Kemp were also named joint best Ladies’ League players, while G. Pre ston was top Second Division player.

Runners-up in the PremierDivision

were Legion A, while Wagon and Horses and White Hart were promot

ed as First Division winners and run ners-up. White Horse A and B won promo

tion as Second and Third Division runners-up, while Bridge B won the

:iThird Division. Runners-up in the Ladies’ League

were Dog Inn B, who also beat Pendle Hotel Ladies to win the Challenge Cup. Billington A were men’s Challenge Trophy runners-up to Buck, with

.Stork Hotel A beaten in the Chris Stewart Foundation Trophy.

.. Rose and Crown’s Paul Blackburn 'ivas best player in the Premier Divi sion.

Paul Hodges and D. Cox took the

Doubles Knockout competition, just pipping Gareth Hetherington and James Whitwell to the title. Best Lady Player in the Men’s

League was Lenee Catlow of Pendle Witch.

. Best doubles pairing was Bridge B’s

R. Rodgers and S. Thompson, beating T. Clough and D. Jarrold of Billington A.

First Division player of the year

was New Inn’s Chris Lawson, who recorded a remarkable 27 wins out of 28.

Third Division player of the year was Bridge B’s Graham Sutcliffe.

Easy victory With good work down the

right hand side from Fazacker- ley and Dewhurst, the Badgers were a definite threat and Chip pendale, ably supported by Nathan Peel, again went close with another header. However, the first-half ended

all square when Coppull equalised from close range, past a hapless Graeme Seedall, just before the whistle. The enormous amount of

energy displayed by the Chorley side was to be a feature repeated in the second half, and although Chadwick worked hard for the Valley men and Lishman passed

the ball with his usual arro gance, the fitness factor began to tell.

As the game wore on, Berry

and Brown, in the heart of the Valley defence, became more and more exposed, and although the eventual 4-1 scoreline was a little harsh, the result was not. All in all with some key play

ers missing, it was a day of only slight disappointment for Anthony Clarkson’s men. A definite case of what might

have been for the Badgers, who remain unbeaten, so far, in the East Lancashire League First Division.'

AN excellent eight-goal haul from Readstone United Under 18s sank local riva|s Nelson Youth. Glen Dinsdale, Dave Speak and

Readstone Under 17s to a 3-3 draw against Colne. After leading 3-0 at half-time,
