ny and panache beat a path to their • local Nissan dealership and the car was a runaway success. Then a matter of months later, Nissan unveils an 82 b.h.p. version of that engine which retailed at only £400 extra when comparing equiv alent SE trim levels. That £400 buys an intercooler that
drops the temperature of the air going to the engine, making the combustion process more effective but it also has a host of other benefits. Performance is transformed from the outset. Whereas the 65 b.h.p. version will struggle to 60 m.p.h. in-17 seconds, your additional

£400 will shave a whopping 4.1 seconds off that time, making the Micra dCi82, probably the greatest performance bar gain ever created; The. top speed has risen by 8 m.p.h. to 104 m.p.h. and, most infuriatingly of all for those look ing to cut costs, the fuel consumption has actually decreased. The combined economy figure of 62.3 m.p.g. for the dCi82 compares favourably with 61 m.p.g. for its less powerful sibling. Three trim levels are offered, SE, SX
or SVE at prices starting at £10,195 for an SE three-door rising to £11,695 for a five-door SX or SVE version. Although the Micra dCi82 may leave buyers of the dCi65 feeling a little sore, there’s a lot to like about it.

• your anchor and then carry on as before. . Other aspects of the car inspire unex pected entertainment. The digital fuel meter atop the dashboard is just such an item. As well as a conventional fuel gauge

in the instrument cluster, the digital gauge displays what range you have left and what your current fuel consumption is. You will find yourself idling down hills, watching the fuel economy soar into the 80 m;p.g. range and then wincing as it drops into the teens going up the other side. The range indicator is accurate as well, the clock hitting zero just as the Avensis spluttered into a garage. The stereo is also a superb installation.
Loud and punchy, it is also supremely easy to operate while driving thanks to steering wheel mounted controls and it is one of the few systems I have come across that tidily integrate both a cassette and a CD aperture into the dashboard. Other plus points include the air conditioning. The Avensis is a car. th a t deserves
respect. Its superb quality and rock solid engineering will put it on the shortlists of many.
