Engagemen '■ - .

THE Guide Dogs for the Blind Association has received a major funding boost after a coffee morning on Saturday. Held a t the United

Reformed Church, the morning consisted of a tombola, cake stall and sale of Christmas cards, calen dars and diaries designed by members. A generous amount of £760 was raised

for the Burnley and District branch. Former secretary of the

branch and now a commit tee member, Miss Christine Bailey, said: “The morning was very busy with I think over 100 guests. There was a nice atmosphere and I want to thank everybody for their support in donating prizes for the tombola and setting up the stalls.”

Among those present was

former Castle Cement work er Mr Christopher Tatter- sail of Chatburn Road, Chtheroe, who has raised a lot of money for the charity in the past. Our picture shows Mr

Tattersall with dog “Fable”, Joan Pickard and dog “Fran” (right) and Brenda Midgley with dog “Lucy” (left).

Concerns over unit

PLANS to expand a controver sial psychiatric unit at Langho could be referred to the Home Office. Ribble Valley MP Nigel Evans

has asked Home Office Ministers to intervene a f te r being inundated with letters and phone calls from concerned residents living near the Kemple View development. Run privately by Partnerships in

Care, Kemple View is licensed by the Home Office to house up to 64 patients under the Mental Health Act. I t aims to rehabilitate them and

ease them back into society. However, nearby residents have been alarmed by a series of patients absconding from the unit, despite the security measures in place there. They include perimeter fencing and CCTV cam eras, locked doors and restricted open ing windows.

Now managers a t Kemple View

have unveiled plans for a new 18-bed unit, dose to the Rhydings housing estate. The new unit would house patients

detained by the courts under the Mental Health Act. I t replaces a pro posed 16-bed unit, which already has

planning permission. Last Thursday, residents voiced their fears, over the plans a t a packed public meeting in Langho Social Club, accusing man agers at Kemple View of putting fam ilies at risk. Now Conservative MP Mr Evans,

responding to the residents’ concerns, has called for an urgent meeting with managers at the psychiatric unit. . He also wants to see Home Office

involvement in the proposed new 18- bed unit. The planning application is due to be considered by Ribble Valley Borough Council on Thursday, Octo ber 30th.

time we’ve taken him to the auction. There were no obvious signs of a forced entry on the Land-Rover: it was locked when we left it and it was still locked

when we got back.” Anyone who can help Mr

Parker trace his sheepdog is requested to telephone 01200 446288.
