types of car, they can often fall whistling between the two stools. The old Suzuki Ignis was a case in point.

Taken in isolation, it was a perfectly accept­ able little thing, but what exactly was it try­


ing to be? Neither a fully fledged supermini, compact 4x4 or supermini-MPV, it tried to be a jack of all trades but mastered none. I t seems Suzuki has gone away, licked its wounds and come back with a fresh assault at this rather nebulous market. The latest Ignis looks to be made of sterner stuff. I t seems Suzuki has also reined in the hype.


Whereas it rather grandiosely labelled its pre­ decessor a multi compact, the latest car is a plain old supermini, albeit one “with the prac­ ticality of an SUV” (sports utility vehicle - American for 4x4). The 1.5-litre 4GRIP model utilises a full­

time four-wheel drive system mated to a tough manual gearbox and retails at just £8,953. This is the flagship of the Ignis range, the front-wheel drive 1.5-litre automatic weighing in at an identical £8,953 and the entry-level 1.3-litre front-wheel drive manual car opening proceedings at £7,953. Keen spotters may notice that the entry level is now a good £1,000 more than before. What are buyers get­ ting for that extra expenditure? The styling is a good deal more assured.

The stereo controls are integrated into the dashboard to foil any opportunist villains. There is also an informa­ tion display mounted above the stereo that shows the radio frequency or CD track, time, current fuel consumption and outside temper­ ature.


Although the Ignis will still confuse some buyers, it offers a lot of car for the money

a leather-trimmed gearknob and gaiter to give a sporting impression although neither of the engines is particularly rapid. Both are, howev­ er, Euro IV compliant and extremely fuel effi­ cient so there will not be any unexpected stings in the tail of Ignis ownership. The 4G R IP model features a viscous coupling mounted just ahead of the rear axle to opti­ mise weight distribution and minimise vibra­ tion from the axle and differential. The sus­ pension system is not the most sophisticated around but it does a good job of mopping up the worst high frequency vibrations. The steering uses an electric power system to take the effort out of low speed manoeuvring. This system offers a number of advantages over a more typical hydraulic system, not least of which is a benefit in fuel economy of between three and five per cent. Safety is well accounted for with the brakes

b.h.p. 1.9-litre dCi for those looking for something with a little more shove. A 100 b.h.p. version of the 1.5-litre dCi is also set for an appearance. The diesel engines are certain to prove more popular with British buyers and Renault’s expertise in this field gives it a significant advantage over many rivals. The dCi diesels are all smooth and pleasantly punchy, but the 120 b.h..p. 1.9- litre unit is exceptionally good. The Megane Sport Tourer is a car that


younger customers may well find appealing. The traditional estate buyer will still look to big Volvos and Subarus but if you need a sporty, modern way of transporting your lifestyle addenda or D IY paraphernalia, the Megane Sport Tourer makes a good fist of the job. Never frumpy yet still able to lug surpris­


ingly big loads, it is enough to change your perception about estate cars.
