Whalley Golf Club and played the violin with Colne Orchestra. He enjoyed holidays abroad, but having moved from Fence to his home outside Gisburn eight years ago was particularly fond of the countryside surround ing it and spending time in his garden. The funeral was held at

St Luke’s Church, Brier- field, on Tuesday after noon. Mr Hamer leaves his wife and two sons.

was not all it should have been because, he told the inquiry, he deliberately misled the council, at the least by implying that it was his own business which was moving there and later stating there was no busi ness operating from his

and accessories to a growing number of satisfied customers throughout the area. On Sunday, October 19th, it will open a new 90ft. by

65ft. pet and equestrian supplies superstore at its base at Brookhouse Farm, on the B6246 Whalley to Mit- ton Road. The expansion will mean a huge increase in the

amount and variety of goods on offer - and a decrease in prices. John Townson, head of the family farm and busi

ness, explained: “Because we now have the facility to carry more stock, we are able to go direct to the manu facturer and buy in bulk. It means that.we can buy cheaper and pass on that saving to the customer, mak ing us extremely competitive in price.” The Townsons have farmed at Brookhouse for 30

years, diversifying some years ago into providing sta bling and grazing for local horse owners. John was a keen rider and amateur jockey himself, so it seemed the natural move. Since then the business has grown steadily so that it

now provides DIY livery for 25 horses in a clean, mod em, well-ventilated and well-designed building.

Part of that building has

also been used as a cash- and- carry retail area, selling animal and pet foods and accessories.

house. His son used the milt to

the end of 2000, but, Mr Robinson told the inquiry, his own business carried on

the council had pointed out to him that Mr Robinson's inquiry evidence was “totally at variance” with the documentary evidence in its possession. However, went on the

inspector, although he found the balance a fine one, he considered that the evidence before him was not sufficient to demon strate that the house use for minibuses ceased alto gether during the 10-year period prior to the notice. Therefore, the use had probably become lawful due to the passage of time and it was too late for enforcement action.

- Euro MP Brussels would fall at the first hurdle. The Liberal Democrat,

who is a member of the European Parliament’s health committee, said it would be a step too far and would breach the principle that decisions should always be taken at the low est possible level. Mr Davies said: “The

commissioner is right to flag up his concerns about smoking and health, but he is quite wrong to suggest that we would need EU leg islation on the issue. This is a matter best left to national governments and

" the European Parliament would throw it out as inap propriate interference.”

TOWNSON outside the new store

(K071003/5b) \ s SNacks But the enterprise - initially a sideline - has strug

gled to keep pace with growing demand in its restrict ed space. That will certainly not be the case when it moves

into the new purpose-built store, which will be fitted out with supermarket-style shelving and manufactur ers’ displays. As well as equestrian supplies, it will stock food and

accessories for owners of dogs, cats, poultry, rabbits, guinea pigs, birds and countless other pets, living up to the firm’s logo - “You keep it, we’ll feed it”. Additional lines will include wild bird food, hen

runs, rabbit hutches, grooming supplies and many more items. Although based on a working farm, this is in no way

a “trade only” or “agricultural” outlet - it is open to all, just like any High Street shop. Opening the new store has also freed up space in the existing building t- space that will be put to good use and bring extra benefits to users of the equestrian facilities. The Townsons’ ambitious plans include additional

human and animal physiotherapist and hopes to run sessions for horses and their riders at the centre on one day a week. She also treats other animals, including racing greyhounds. From December, the centre will also offer a compre

stabling for visiting horses and a hydrotherapy unit and solarium for treating horses with strains, sprains and other injuries. John’s daughter, Andrea Shipley, is a fully qualified

hensive dog washing, grooming and clipping service, ran by a fully-qualified technician. The Townsons also

hope in future to offer a full livery service at their sta bles, with every aspect of equine'care and stable main tenance in an all-inclusive package. Other members of the family business are John’s

wife, Dorothy, their son, Jonathan, and yard manager Fiona Griffiths. Although not related, she is like a member of the family and her loyalty and long service led to her becoming a director of the firm. The latest expansion will also create two new full

time jobs - a rare boon to a rural area. A grant from DEFRA covered 30% of the cost of the new buildings and fittings, and that investment filters throughout the district, with local companies employed to carry out the work. Mr Townson commented: “I’d like to pay tribute to

our local suppliers for the high quality of goods and services that we’ve received from them. I wouldn’t hes itate to recommend them.” The new store will be

opened by showjumping leg end Harvey Smith at 2-30 p.m. on October 19th and everyone is welcome. There will be spe cial offers, family activities and a prize draw. The store will be open from 8-30 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekdays, 8-30 a.m. to 4-30 p.m. on Saturdays and from 10 a.m. to 12 noon on Sundays.
