A vicar becomes ‘one of the few’ as he wins seat

by Tim Procter

TH E Vicar of Whalley, the Rev. Chris Sterry, is one of few Angli can clergymen to be a Conserva tive councillor in the whole coun try. “Some places in the south have

quite a few vicars who are council lors, but as far as I know they all represent Labour,” says Mr Ster ry.

Feeling that someone with his

experience had something to offer, Mr Sterry had no qualms about seeking election. He has had little opposition from parishioners. One person has e-mailed the

vicar with a Biblical question con nected with the free market econ omy. He has been told that some one shouted an uncomplimentary remark at him across the street, although he heard nothing him self. But others have made it clear

they are content that Mr Sterry will be able to keep religion and politics well apart, which he cer tainly intends to do. He believes that, in any case, politics do not play a major role in the Valley’s own affairs. Councillors usually

vote on personal views, or ward interests, rather than on political lines. M r Sterry is a supporter of

local M P Mr Nigel Evans, but is not yet certain what role he would play in any general election, where politics are to the fore. Most Tory councillors use their

status to try to influence such campaigns, but M r Sterry feels that time will tell whether or not it would be appropriate for him. However, he keeps a close eye

on the national scene. A t the weekend Mr Sterry publicly criti cised T ory leader Iain Duncan Smith, saying that he lacked the necessary “ oomph” to he in charge.

CHAMPAGNE flowed as the Conservatives strengthened their rein on Ribble Valley Bor

ough Council. By the early hours of Friday, the

B N P threat had come - and gone, but certainly can not be dismissed in the future. The first result to be announced

was not totally unexpected. Mayor- elect Frank Goss lost his Sabden seat to Conservative newcomer Michael Fielding. Obviously disappointed, Mr Goss

said he had enjoyed his four years on the council and would decide in

another four whether to try again. Tributes were paid to him by Con servative leader Coun.Chris Holtom who commented that, despite the fact that it had been an excellent night for the Conservative Party, he was sorry to see the departure of the mayor-elect. For retiring Mayor Joyce Holgate,

it was an excellent finale to a year

she had obviously thoroughly enjoyed. Whalley's electorate showed its appreciation with 708 votes and, to complete the picture, the man who had been her chaplain and occa sional acting consort for the past 12 months, vicar the Rev. Chris Sterry now joins her on the borough author ity, having polled 583 votes at his first attempt. "It's a good end to a fabulous year," she commented. There was a strong police presence

outside Roefield Bam, Clitheroe, as counting began shortly after 9 p.m. There was no trouble and the count progressed without incident. For the British National Party’s

five candidates, it was probably one of the longest nights ever, as they watched counting clerks checking and re-checking the voting slips. They had worked hard and there was genuine concern among several of their opponents that the canvass ing might have seen at least one can

didate returned. I t was not to be,

but with 1,284 votes polled between the five, they certainly made an impact on voters and vowed to return. B N P candidate Peter McQuade

took most votes with 295 in Edis ford and Low Moor, but with six candidates for the two seats, was pushed into fourth place. Fellow candidate Ivan Duxbury, contesting Primrose, was third out of seven with 242 votes, and ahead of the Conservative and Labour candi dates. In St Mary's Ward, wife of retir

ing Liberal Democrat Howel Jones, Beverley Jones romped home with 561 votes with Lib. Dem. party leader Frank Dyson in hot pursuit with 500. New Zealand-born Mrs Jones will

have plenty of advice and help from one of the council's father figures, now taking well-earned time out. For Clitheroe Mayor-elect Joan

K night, the declaration o f the

parish results were more than wel come in the early hours, as she retained her seat on the town coun cil to ensure Tuesday's mayor-mak ing went ahead as planned. Conservative leader Coun. Chris,

Holtom, standing for Wilpshire, was returned unopposed and led celebra tions at the end of the count as the Conservatives retained overall con trol of the borough council with 22 seats. " I am pleased and thank all the Conservative Party workers who have been behind the scenes and have worked hard. They are the unsung heroes," he said. "We have been well organised. We have good leadership. This is something the Liberal Democrat opponents have lacked over the past four years." In the town's S althill Ward,

Stephen Adnitt, head of St James's CE Primary School in Clitheroe, lost his seat to fellow Liberal Demo crat David Barryman, with Conser

vative Ian Brown making a return

to the borough council he le ft in 1991. Away on business, his wife relayed the news of his success in both borough and town council elec tions by telephone. Husband and wife duo Stephen

and Margaret Sutcliffe retained their seats with massive majorities in the Litt lem oor Ward for the Liberal Democrats, with 755 and 700 votes respectively and took even more votes for the town council with 828 and 790. The highest turnout was in Sab

den, where the b att le between mayor-elect Frank Goss and Conser vative Michael Fielding resulted in a massive 61.1%. Elsewhere figures were up, some

thing numerous party workers put down to the advent of the BNP and the number of younger voters who, it seems, had turned out in one of the Ribble Valley's most controversial elections for many years.
