BIKING across Britain for charity is the aim of a Ribble Valley man. Mr Bill Honeywell will be setting off
on Saturday from Land’s End and plans to reach John o’Groats in two weeks’ time. He is hoping that his 950-mile ride will bring in funds for breast cancer research and treatment, through the aus pices of Christie Hospital, and is appeal ing for sponsors. He will be riding alone, but back-up
en- route will be provided by his wife, Valerie, from the comforts of a motorhome loaned by a supporter. Clitheroe cycle shop Pedal Power is help ing with spares and service cover for his bicycle. Mr Honeywell, who is a chartered sur
veyor and estate agent, said: “I ’ve been training for some time now and hopefully will be fit enough to complete the ride in one piece. I’m really looking forward, not just to the ride, but to raising as much as possible for breast cancer research.” He is no stranger to charity rides, hav
ing cycled coast to coast across the North of England in August, 2001, with Mr Frank Brown. They raised £1,800 for Christie’s against Cancer, and he hopes to improve on that this time. He said: “If I could double what we
raised on the last ride it would be fantas tic but, whatever the result, all donations will be gratefully accepted.” Anyone wishing to help with sponsor

the short straw when the proper hairdresser failed to show for the cropping ceremony and care assis

going ahead, Ricky Etough came out in sympathy and volunteered to have his head shaved, too. Other customers joined in with
the spirit of the occasion. Royal Mail employee Eric Greenwood and Joe Pentony, who works for Akzo Nobel at Blackburn, decid ed to dress from head to toe as a pair of attractive ladies to go on a pub crawl around the town. Other customers followed on
behind with buckets and brought in a collection totalling £200. The weekend’s events will not
be the end of it. They are now busy organising
another series of events for the next Bank Holiday, including a five-a-side football tournament with a rugby ball and a rounders match using a beach ball. In our picture, Christine Walker
