wrong. Ford have virtually admitted as much with the return of the 75bhp 1.25- litre to the Fiesta range. In matching the unspectacular 70b.h.p 1.3-litre with the sassiness of the current Fies ta there seemed a real mismatch. Great car, OK engine. The Bridgend-built 1.25 may be a blast from the past, but what a blast it is. The lightweight aluminium engine was
a highlight of the outgoing Fiesta range, being one of the sweetest small car engines around. Therefore, it was a little puzzling when Ford announced the current Fiesta with the asthmatic eight-valve 1.3-litre lump as the entry-level engine. Its 67b.h.p was only the same as the 1.0-litre engine

used in the Toyota Yam and a few horses shy of the 1.2-litre powerplant th a t ’s plumbed into the business end of a Corsa. The 1.25 offers a bit more zip. Take perfor mance figures for example. Whereas the 1.3 would make GOm.p.h in 15.8 seconds, the smaller engine slices over a second off, stopping the watch at 14.5 seconds. The combined fuel economy figure of 45.6m.p.g remains unchanged, but C02 emissions creep up slightly to 148g/km. Being replaced by an engine from the
past seems something of a humiliation, but the Fiesta 1.25 is a better car than the 1.3, prices have stayed the same and British buyers should be happy.

the MINI One D’s 1.4-litre unit isn’t exactly the same as Toyota fit to their Yaris D-4D. A development period of over two years has seen this engine refet tled into a 75bhp lightweight unit that better suits the driving characteristics of MINI owners with more torque to haul the heavier MINI body around.

Fuel con sumption is pegged at an average of 58.9 mpg which when coupled with the m in i ’s decently sized fuel tank means an effective range of 625 miles. the way for a number of ever improving all-wheel drive cars but only with the launch of the V70 R have the company married a capable four-wheel drive chassis with their tradition of building maniacal ly fast estate cars. With 300b.h.p on tap from its 2.5-litre
turbocharged engine, the V70 R is rarely at a loss for traction, the intelligent Haldex differential directing drive to whichever wheel is most capable of deploying it. The V70 R is a testament to this prag
matic approach and, carrying a retail price of £37,660, a surprisingly affordable one. If you want a full-sized estate with four- wheel drive you can either pay for the

Volvo or stump up another £10,00 for the significantly slower Audi S6 Avant. If you want a slightly quicker estate,
try a Mercedes C32 AMG, but you will have to fork out another £7,000 and would be getting a much smaller car with out four-wheel drive. Suddenly the V70 R looks a very astute piece of marketing. Performance is very rapid indeed, the
manual car reaching 60m.p.h. in a flashing 5.7 seconds with a top speed of 155m.p.h. Opt instead for the £38,910 Geartronic automatic version and the sprint is cov ered in a more sedate 7.5 seconds. A com bined fuel economy figure of 25.9m.p.g. is some achievement for such a big, powerful car, especially when the Audi S6 can only manage 19.6mpg.
